19.41

surah 19 - verse 41

Arberry And mention in the Book Abraham; surely he was a true man, a Prophet.
Maududi (O Muhammad), recite in the Book the account of Abraham. Most surely he was a man of truth, a Prophet.
Pickthall And make mention (O Muhammad) in the Scripture of Abraham. Lo! he was a saint, a prophet.
Sahih And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.
Yusuf Ali (Also mention in the Book (the story of) Abraham: He was a man of Truth, a prophet.

19.42

surah 19 - verse 42

Arberry When he said to his father, 'Father, why worshippest thou that which neither hears nor sees, nor avails thee anything?
Maududi (And remind people) when he said to his father: "Father! Why do you worship that which neither sees nor hears, and which can be of no avail to you?
Pickthall When he said unto his father: O my father! Why worshippest thou that which heareth not nor seeth, nor can in aught avail thee?
Sahih [Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?
Yusuf Ali Behold, he said to his father: "O my father! why worship that which heareth not and seeth not, and can profit thee nothing?

19.43

surah 19 - verse 43

Arberry Father, there has come to me knowledge such as came not to thee; so follow me, and I will guide thee on a level path.
Maududi Father, a knowledge that has not reached you has come to me. So follow me that I may guide you to a Straight Way.
Pickthall O my father! Lo! there hath come unto me of knowledge that which came not unto thee. So follow me, and I will lead thee on a right path.
Sahih O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.
Yusuf Ali "O my father! to me hath come knowledge which hath not reached thee: so follow me: I will guide thee to a way that is even and straight.

19.44

surah 19 - verse 44

Arberry Father, serve not Satan; surely Satan is a rebel against the All-merciful.
Maududi Father, do not serve Satan, for Satan has indeed been a persistent rebel against the Most Compassionate Lord.
Pickthall O my father! Serve not the devil. Lo! the devil is a rebel unto the Beneficent.
Sahih O my father, do not worship Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.
Yusuf Ali "O my father! serve not Satan: for Satan is a rebel against (Allah) Most Gracious.

19.45

surah 19 - verse 45

Arberry Father, I fear that some chastisement from the All-merciful will smite thee, so that thou becomest a friend to Satan.
Maududi Father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Compassionate Lord might strike you and you may end up as one of Satan's companions?"
Pickthall O my father! Lo! I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent overtake thee so that thou become a comrade of the devil.
Sahih O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."
Yusuf Ali "O my father! I fear lest a Penalty afflict thee from (Allah) Most Gracious, so that thou become to Satan a friend."

19.46

surah 19 - verse 46

Arberry Said he, 'What, art thou shrinking from my gods, Abraham? Surely, if thou givest not over, I shall stone thee; so forsake me now for some while.'
Maududi The father said: "Abraham, have you turned away from my gods? If you do not give this up, I shall stone you to death. Now begone from me forever."
Pickthall He said: Rejectest thou my gods, O Abraham? If thou cease not, I shall surely stone thee. Depart from me a long while!
Sahih [His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."
Yusuf Ali (The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods, O Abraham? If thou forbear not, I will indeed stone thee: Now get away from me for a good long while!"

19.47

surah 19 - verse 47

Arberry He said, 'Peace be upon thee! I will ask my Lord to forgive thee; surely He is ever gracious to me.
Maududi Abraham answered: "Peace be upon you. I shall seek pardon for you from my Lord. My Lord has always been kind to Me.
Pickthall He said: Peace be unto thee! I shall ask forgiveness of my Lord for thee. Lo! He was ever gracious unto me.
Sahih [Abraham] said, "Peace will be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
Yusuf Ali Abraham said: "Peace be on thee: I will pray to my Lord for thy forgiveness: for He is to me Most Gracious.

19.48

surah 19 - verse 48

Arberry Now I will go apart from you and that you call upon, apart from God; I will call upon my Lord, and haply I shall not be, in calling upon my Lord, unprosperous.
Maududi I shall withdraw from you and all that you call upon beside Allah. I shall only call upon my Lord. I trust the prayer to my Lord will not go unanswered."
Pickthall I shall withdraw from you and that unto which ye pray beside Allah, and I shall pray unto my Lord. It may be that, in prayer unto my Lord, I shall not be unblest.
Sahih And I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allah and will invoke my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy."
Yusuf Ali "And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah: I will call on my Lord: perhaps, by my prayer to my Lord, I shall be not unblest."

19.49

surah 19 - verse 49

Arberry So, when he went apart from them and that they were serving, apart from God, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each We made a Prophet;
Maududi Thereupon Abraham dissociated himself from his people and the deities they worshipped instead of Allah, and We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob and made each of them a Prophet;
Pickthall So, when he had withdrawn from them and that which they were worshipping beside Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob. Each of them We made a prophet.
Sahih So when he had left them and those they worshipped other than Allah, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each [of them] We made a prophet.
Yusuf Ali When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah, We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and each one of them We made a prophet.

19.50

surah 19 - verse 50

Arberry and We gave them of Our mercy, and We appointed unto them a tongue of truthfulness, sublime.
Maududi and We bestowed on them Our mercy, and granted them a truly lofty renown.
Pickthall And we gave them of Our mercy, and assigned to them a high and true renown.
Sahih And We gave them of Our mercy, and we made for them a reputation of high honor.
Yusuf Ali And We bestowed of Our Mercy on them, and We granted them lofty honour on the tongue of truth.

19.51

Arberry And mention in the Book Moses; he was devoted, and he was a Messenger, a Prophet.
Maududi And recite in the Book the account of Moses. He was a chosen one, a Messenger, a Prophet.
Pickthall And make mention in the Scripture of Moses. Lo! he was chosen, and he was a messenger (of Allah), a prophet.
Sahih And mention in the Book, Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.
Yusuf Ali Also mention in the Book (the story of) Moses: for he was specially chosen, and he was a messenger (and) a prophet.

19.52

surah 19 - verse 52

Arberry We called to him from the right side Of the Mount, and We brought him near in communion.
Maududi We called out to him from the right side of the Mount, and We drew him near to Us by communing to him in secret,
Pickthall We called him from the right slope of the Mount, and brought him nigh in communion.
Sahih And We called him from the side of the mount at [his] right and brought him near, confiding [to him].
Yusuf Ali And we called him from the right side of Mount (Sinai), and made him draw near to Us, for mystic (converse).

19.53

surah 19 - verse 53

Arberry And We gave him his brother Aaron, of Our mercy, a Prophet.
Maududi and out of Our mercy We appointed his brother Aaron, a Prophet (that he may assist him).
Pickthall And We bestowed upon him of Our mercy his brother Aaron, a prophet (likewise).
Sahih And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.
Yusuf Ali And, out of Our Mercy, We gave him his brother Aaron, (also) a prophet.

19.54

surah 19 - verse 54

Arberry And mention in the Book Ishmael; he was true to his promise, and he was a Messenger, a Prophet.
Maududi And recite in the Book the account of Ishmael. He was ever true to his promise, and was a Messenger, a Prophet.
Pickthall And make mention in the Scripture of Ishmael. Lo! he was a keeper of his promise, and he was a messenger (of Allah), a prophet.
Sahih And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.
Yusuf Ali Also mention in the Book (the story of) Isma'il: He was (strictly) true to what he promised, and he was a messenger (and) a prophet.

19.55

surah 19 - verse 55

Arberry He bade his people to pray and to give the alms, and he was pleasing to his Lord.
Maududi He enjoined his household to observe Prayer and to give Zakah (purifying alms); and his Lord was well pleased with him.
Pickthall He enjoined upon his people worship and almsgiving, and was acceptable in the sight of his Lord.
Sahih And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakah and was to his Lord pleasing.
Yusuf Ali He used to enjoin on his people Prayer and Charity, and he was most acceptable in the sight of his Lord.

19.56

Arberry And mention in the Book Idris; he was a true man, a Prophet.

19.57

Arberry We raised him up to a high place.
Maududi and We exalted him to a lofty position.
Pickthall And We raised him to high station.
Sahih And We raised him to a high station.
Yusuf Ali And We raised him to a lofty station.

19.58

surah 19 - verse 58

Arberry These are they whom God has blessed among the Prophets of the seed of Adam, and of those We bore with Noah, and of the seed of Abraham and Israel, and of those We guided and chose. When the signs of the All-merciful were recited to them, they fell down prostrate, weeping.
Maududi These are the Prophets upon whom Allah bestowed His favour from the seed of Adam, and from the seed of those whom We carried (in the Ark) with Noah, and from the seed of Abraham and Israel. They were those whom We guided and chose (for an exalted position). They were such that when the words of the Most Compassionate Lord were recited to them, they fell down in prostration, weeping.
Pickthall These are they unto whom Allah showed favour from among the prophets, of the seed of Adam and of those whom We carried (in the ship) with Noah, and of the seed of Abraham and Israel, and from among those whom We guided and chose. When the revelations of the Beneficent were recited unto them, they fell down, adoring and weeping.
Sahih Those were the ones upon whom Allah bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
Yusuf Ali Those were some of the prophets on whom Allah did bestow His Grace,- of the posterity of Adam, and of those who We carried (in the Ark) with Noah, and of the posterity of Abraham and Israel of those whom We guided and chose. Whenever the Signs of (Allah) Most Gracious were rehearsed to them, they would fall down in prostrate adoration and in tears.

19.59

surah 19 - verse 59

Arberry Then there succeeded after them a succession who wasted the prayer, and followed lusts; so they shall encounter error
Maududi They were succeeded by a people who neglected the Prayers and pursued their lusts. They shall presently meet with their doom,
Pickthall Now there hath succeeded them a later generation whom have ruined worship and have followed lusts. But they will meet deception.
Sahih But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil -
Yusuf Ali But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction,-

19.60

surah 19 - verse 60

Arberry save him who repents, and believes, and does a righteous deed; those -- they shall enter Paradise, and they shall not be wronged anything;
Maududi except those who repent and believe and act righteously. Such shall enter Paradise and shall not be wronged at all.
Pickthall Save him who shall repent and believe and do right. Such will enter the Garden, and they will not be wronged in aught -
Sahih Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.
Yusuf Ali Except those who repent and believe, and work righteousness: for these will enter the Garden and will not be wronged in the least,-
