Surah An Najm (The Star)

53.1

surah 53 - verse 1

Arberry By the Star when it plunges,
Maududi By the star when it sets:
Pickthall By the Star when it setteth,
Sahih By the star when it descends,
Yusuf Ali By the Star when it goes down,-

53.2

surah 53 - verse 2

translator's name verse
Arberry your comrade is not astray, neither errs,
Maududi your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded;
Pickthall Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived;
Sahih Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
Yusuf Ali Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled.

53.3

surah 53 - verse 3

Arberry nor speaks he out of caprice.
Maududi nor does he speak out of his desire.
Pickthall Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire.
Sahih Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
Yusuf Ali Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.

53.4

Arberry This is naught but a revelation revealed,
Maududi This is nothing but a revelation that is conveyed to him,
Pickthall It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,
Sahih It is not but a revelation revealed,
Yusuf Ali It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:

Arberry taught him by one terrible in power,
Maududi something that a very powerful one has imparted to him,
Pickthall Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,
Sahih Taught to him by one intense in strength -
Yusuf Ali He was taught by one Mighty in Power,

53.6

surah 53 - verse 6

Arberry very strong; he stood poised,
Maududi one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised,
Pickthall One vigorous; and he grew clear to view
Sahih One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
Yusuf Ali Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form);

Arberry being on the higher horizon,
Maududi being on the higher horizon.
Pickthall When he was on the uppermost horizon.
Sahih While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.
Yusuf Ali While he was in the highest part of the horizon:

Arberry then drew near and suspended hung,
Maududi Then he drew near and hung above suspended,
Pickthall Then he drew nigh and came down
Sahih Then he approached and descended
Yusuf Ali Then he approached and came closer,

53.9

surah 53 - verse 9

Arberry two bows' length away, or nearer,
Maududi until he was two bows' length away, or nearer.
Pickthall Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer,
Sahih And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
Yusuf Ali And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer;

53.10

surah 53 - verse 10

Arberry then revealed to his servant that he revealed.
Maududi Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal.
Pickthall And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed.
Sahih And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed.
Yusuf Ali So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey.

53.11

surah 53 - verse 11

translator's name verse
Arberry His heart lies not of what he saw;
Maududi His heart added no untruth to what he saw.
Pickthall The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw.
Sahih The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.
Yusuf Ali The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw.

53.12

surah 53 - verse 12

Arberry what, will you dispute with him what he sees?
Maududi Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes?
Pickthall Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth?
Sahih So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
Yusuf Ali Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw?

53.13

surah 53 - verse 13

Arberry Indeed, he saw him another time
Maududi Indeed he saw him a second time,
Pickthall And verily he saw him yet another time
Sahih And he certainly saw him in another descent
Yusuf Ali For indeed he saw him at a second descent,

53.14

surah 53 - verse 14

Arberry by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary
Maududi by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary,
Pickthall By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,
Sahih At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
Yusuf Ali Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass:

Arberry nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge,
Maududi near which is the Garden of Abode.
Pickthall Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode.
Sahih Near it is the Garden of Refuge -
Yusuf Ali Near it is the Garden of Abode.

53.16

surah 53 - verse 16

Arberry when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered;
Maududi (This was) when the lote-tree was covered with that which covered it.
Pickthall When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree,
Sahih When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].
Yusuf Ali Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

53.17

surah 53 - verse 17

translator's name verse
Arberry his eye swerved not; nor swept astray.
Maududi His eye did not waver, nor did it stray,
Pickthall The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold.
Sahih The sight [of the Prophet] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
Yusuf Ali (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!

53.18

surah 53 - verse 18

translator's name verse
Arberry Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord.
Maududi and he certainly saw some of the greatest Signs of His Lord.
Pickthall Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.
Sahih He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
Yusuf Ali For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!

53.19

surah 53 - verse 19

Arberry Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza
Maududi Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza,
Pickthall Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza
Sahih So have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?
Yusuf Ali Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza,

53.20
