Surah Al Maarij (The Ascending Steps)

70.21

surah 70 - verse 21

Arberry when good visits him, grudging,
Maududi and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him,
Pickthall And, when good befalleth him, grudging;
Sahih And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
Yusuf Ali And niggardly when good reaches him;-

70.22

surah 70 - verse 22

Arberry save those that pray
Maududi except those that pray,
Pickthall Save worshippers.
Sahih Except the observers of prayer -
Yusuf Ali Not so those devoted to Prayer;-

70.23

surah 70 - verse 23

Arberry and continue at their prayers,
Maududi and are constant in their Prayer;
Pickthall Who are constant at their worship
Sahih Those who are constant in their prayer
Yusuf Ali Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;

70.24

surah 70 - verse 24

Arberry those in whose wealth is a right known
Maududi and those in whose wealth there is a known right
Pickthall And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged
Sahih And those within whose wealth is a known right
Yusuf Ali And those in whose wealth is a recognised right.

70.25

surah 70 - verse 25

Arberry for the beggar and the outcast,
Maududi for those that ask and those that are dispossessed,
Pickthall For the beggar and the destitute;
Sahih For the petitioner and the deprived -
Yusuf Ali For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);

70.26

Arberry who confirm the Day of Doom
Maududi those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense,
Pickthall And those who believe in the Day of Judgment,
Sahih And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
Yusuf Ali And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;

70.27

surah 70 - verse 27

Arberry and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord
Maududi and fear the chastisement of their Lord –
Pickthall And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom -
Sahih And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
Yusuf Ali And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,-

70.28

surah 70 - verse 28

Arberry (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure)
Maududi surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from –
Pickthall Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure -
Sahih Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
Yusuf Ali For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;-

70.29

surah 70 - verse 29

Arberry and guard their private parts
Maududi and those who guard their private parts,
Pickthall And those who preserve their chastity
Sahih And those who guard their private parts
Yusuf Ali And those who guard their chastity,

70.30

surah 70 - verse 30

Arberry save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy
Maududi except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable,
Pickthall Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;
Sahih Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
Yusuf Ali Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,

70.31

surah 70 - verse 31

Arberry (but whoso seeks after more than that, they are the transgressors),
Maududi but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors,
Pickthall But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors;
Sahih But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
Yusuf Ali But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;-

70.32

surah 70 - verse 32

Arberry and who preserve their trusts and their covenant,
Maududi and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants,
Pickthall And those who keep their pledges and their covenant,
Sahih And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
Yusuf Ali And those who respect their trusts and covenants;

70.33

surah 70 - verse 33

Arberry and perform their witnessings,
Maududi and those who are upright in their testimonies;
Pickthall And those who stand by their testimony
Sahih And those who are in their testimonies upright
Yusuf Ali And those who stand firm in their testimonies;

70.34

surah 70 - verse 34

Arberry and who observe their prayers.
Maududi and who take due care of their Prayer:
Pickthall And those who are attentive at their worship.
Sahih And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
Yusuf Ali And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;-

70.35

surah 70 - verse 35

Arberry Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured.
Maududi all these shall live honourably in the Gardens.
Pickthall These will dwell in Gardens, honoured.
Sahih They will be in gardens, honored.
Yusuf Ali Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).

70.36

surah 70 - verse 36

Arberry What ails the unbelievers, running with outstretched necks
Maududi But what is the matter with the unbelievers who are hurrying towards you
Pickthall What aileth those who disbelieve, that they keep staring toward thee (O Muhammad), open-eyed,
Sahih So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muhammad],
Yusuf Ali Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee-

70.37

surah 70 - verse 37

Arberry towards thee on the right hand and on the left hand in knots?
Maududi in crowds, both on the right and on the left?
Pickthall On the right and on the left, in groups?
Sahih [To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?
Yusuf Ali From the right and from the left, in crowds?

70.38

surah 70 - verse 38

Arberry What, is every man of them eager to be admitted to a Garden of Bliss?
Maududi Does everyone of them wish to enter the Garden of Bliss?
Pickthall Doth every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Delight?
Sahih Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
Yusuf Ali Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?

70.39

surah 70 - verse 39

Arberry Not so; for We have created them of what they know.
Maududi By no means! They know that which We have created them from.
Pickthall Nay, verily. Lo! We created them from what they know.
Sahih No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.
Yusuf Ali By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!

70.40

surah 70 - verse 40

Arberry No! I swear by the Lord of the Easts and Wests, surely We are able
Maududi I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests that We have the power
Pickthall But nay! I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places of the planets that We verily are Able
Sahih So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
Yusuf Ali Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly-
