Surah Al Ahzab (The Clans)

33.61

surah 33 - verse 61

Arberry cursed they shalt be, and wheresoever they are come upon they shall be seized and slaughtered all --
Maududi They shall be cursed from all around and they shall be ruthlessly killed wherever they are seized.
Pickthall Accursed, they will be seized wherever found and slain with a (fierce) slaughter.
Sahih Accursed wherever they are found, [being] seized and massacred completely.
Yusuf Ali They shall have a curse on them: whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain (without mercy).

33.62

surah 33 - verse 62

Arberry God's wont with those who passed away before; and thou shall find no changing the wont of God.
Maududi This has been Allah's Way with those who have gone before, and you shall find no change in Allah's Way.
Pickthall That was the way of Allah in the case of those who passed away of old; thou wilt not find for the way of Allah aught of power to change.
Sahih [This is] the established way of Allah with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allah any change.
Yusuf Ali (Such was) the practice (approved) of Allah among those who lived aforetime: No change wilt thou find in the practice (approved) of Allah.

33.63

surah 33 - verse 63

Arberry The people will question thee concerning the Hour. Say: 'The knowledge of it is only with God; what shall make thee know? Haply the Hour is nigh.'
Maududi People ask you concerning the Hour (of Resurrection). Say: “Allah alone has knowledge of it. What do you know? Perhaps the Hour is nigh.”
Pickthall Men ask thee of the Hour. Say: The knowledge of it is with Allah only. What can convey (the knowledge) unto thee? It may be that the Hour is nigh.
Sahih People ask you concerning the Hour. Say," Knowledge of it is only with Allah. And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near."
Yusuf Ali Men ask thee concerning the Hour: Say, "The knowledge thereof is with Allah (alone)": and what will make thee understand?- perchance the Hour is nigh!

33.64

surah 33 - verse 64

Arberry God has cursed the unbelievers, and prepared for them a Blaze,
Maududi Allah has cursed the unbelievers and has prepared for them a Blazing Fire;
Pickthall Lo! Allah hath cursed the disbelievers, and hath prepared for them a flaming fire,
Sahih Indeed, Allah has cursed the disbelievers and prepared for them a Blaze.
Yusuf Ali Verily Allah has cursed the Unbelievers and prepared for them a Blazing Fire,-

33.65

surah 33 - verse 65

Arberry therein to dwell for ever; they shall find neither protector nor helper.
Maududi therein they shall abide for ever. They shall find none to protect or help them.
Pickthall Wherein they will abide for ever. They will find (then) no protecting friend nor helper.
Sahih Abiding therein forever, they will not find a protector or a helper.
Yusuf Ali To dwell therein for ever: no protector will they find, nor helper.

33.66

surah 33 - verse 66

Arberry Upon the day when their faces are turned about in the Fire they shall say, 'Ah, would we had obeyed God and the Messenger!
Maududi On that Day when their faces shall be turned around in the Fire, they will say: “Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger.”
Pickthall On the day when their faces are turned over in the Fire, they say: Oh, would that we had obeyed Allah and had obeyed His messenger!
Sahih The Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say, "How we wish we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger."
Yusuf Ali The Day that their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire, they will say: "Woe to us! Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!"

33.67

surah 33 - verse 67

Arberry They shall say, 'Our Lord, we obeyed our chiefs and great ones, and they led us astray from the way.
Maududi They will say: “Our Lord, we obeyed our chiefs and our great ones, and they turned us away from the Right Way.
Pickthall And they say: Our Lord! Lo! we obeyed our princes and great men, and they misled us from the Way.
Sahih And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.
Yusuf Ali And they would say: "Our Lord! We obeyed our chiefs and our great ones, and they misled us as to the (right) Path.

33.68

surah 33 - verse 68

Arberry Our Lord, give them chastisement twofold, and curse them with a mighty curse!'
Maududi Our Lord, mete out to them a double chastisement and lay upon them a mighty curse.”
Pickthall Our Lord! Oh, give them double torment and curse them with a mighty curse.
Sahih Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
Yusuf Ali "Our Lord! Give them double Penalty and curse them with a very great Curse!"

33.69

surah 33 - verse 69

Arberry O believers, be not as those who hurt Moses, but God declared him quit of what they said, and he was high honoured with God.
Maududi Believers, do not be like those who distressed Moses and then Allah declared him quit of the ill they spoke about him; and he had a high standing with Allah.
Pickthall O ye who believe! Be not as those who slandered Moses, but Allah proved his innocence of that which they alleged, and he was well esteemed in Allah's sight.
Sahih O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allah, was distinguished.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Be ye not like those who vexed and insulted Moses, but Allah cleared him of the (calumnies) they had uttered: and he was honourable in Allah's sight.

33.70

surah 33 - verse 70

Arberry O believers, fear God, and speak words hitting the mark,
Maududi Believers, fear Allah and speak the truth:
Pickthall O ye who believe! Guard your duty to Allah, and speak words straight to the point;
Sahih O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
Yusuf Ali O ye who believe! Fear Allah, and (always) say a word directed to the Right:

33.71

surah 33 - verse 71

Arberry and He will set right your deeds for you and will forgive you your sins. Whosoever obeys God and His Messenger has won a mighty triumph.
Maududi Allah will set your deeds right for you and will forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has achieved a great triumph.
Pickthall He will adjust your works for you and will forgive you your sins. Whosoever obeyeth Allah and His messenger, he verily hath gained a signal victory.
Sahih He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
Yusuf Ali That He may make your conduct whole and sound and forgive you your sins: He that obeys Allah and His Messenger, has already attained the highest achievement.

33.72

surah 33 - verse 72

Arberry We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to carry it and were afraid of it; and man carried it. Surely he is sinful, very foolish.
Maududi We offered the trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to carry it and were afraid of doing so; but man carried it. Surely he is wrong-doing, ignorant.
Pickthall Lo! We offered the trust unto the heavens and the earth and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it. And man assumed it. Lo! he hath proved a tyrant and a fool.
Sahih Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.
Yusuf Ali We did indeed offer the Trust to the Heavens and the Earth and the Mountains; but they refused to undertake it, being afraid thereof: but man undertook it;- He was indeed unjust and foolish;-

33.73

surah 33 - verse 73

Arberry That God may chastise the hypocrites, men and women alike, and the idolaters, men and women alike; and that God may turn again unto the believers, men and women alike. God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate.
Maududi (The consequence of man's carrying the trust is) that Allah may chastise hypocritical men and hypocritical women and accept the repentance of believing men and believing women. He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Pickthall So Allah punisheth hypocritical men and hypocritical women, and idolatrous men and idolatrous women. But Allah pardoneth believing men and believing women, and Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.
Sahih [It was] so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allah may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
Yusuf Ali (With the result) that Allah has to punish the Hypocrites, men and women, and the Unbelievers, men and women, and Allah turns in Mercy to the Believers, men and women: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
