Surah Al Balad (The City)

90.1

surah 90 - verse 1

Arberry No! I swear by this land,
Maududi Nay! I swear by this city
Pickthall Nay, I swear by this city -
Sahih I swear by this city, Makkah -
Yusuf Ali I do call to witness this City;-

90.2

surah 90 - verse 2

Arberry and thou art a lodger in this land;
Maududi – this city wherein you have been rendered violable–
Pickthall And thou art an indweller of this city -
Sahih And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city -
Yusuf Ali And thou art a freeman of this City;-

90.3

surah 90 - verse 3

Arberry by the begetter, and that he begot,
Maududi and I swear by the parent and his offspring:
Pickthall And the begetter and that which he begat,
Sahih And [by] the father and that which was born [of him],
Yusuf Ali And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-

90.4

Arberry indeed, We created man in trouble.
Maududi Verily We have created man into toil and hardship.
Pickthall We verily have created man in an atmosphere:
Sahih We have certainly created man into hardship.
Yusuf Ali Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.

90.5

Arberry What, does he think none has power over him,
Maududi Does he think that no one can overpower him?
Pickthall Thinketh he that none hath power over him?
Sahih Does he think that never will anyone overcome him?
Yusuf Ali Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?

90.6

surah 90 - verse 6

Arberry saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'?
Maududi He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.”
Pickthall And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:
Sahih He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance."
Yusuf Ali He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!

90.7

Arberry What, does he think none has seen him?
Maududi Does he believe that none has seen him?
Pickthall Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
Sahih Does he think that no one has seen him?
Yusuf Ali Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

90.8

Arberry Have We not appointed to him two eyes,
Maududi Did We not grant him two eyes,
Pickthall Did We not assign unto him two eyes
Sahih Have We not made for him two eyes?
Yusuf Ali Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-

90.9

Arberry and a tongue, and two lips,
Maududi and a tongue and two lips?
Pickthall And a tongue and two lips,
Sahih And a tongue and two lips?
Yusuf Ali And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-

90.10

surah 90 - verse 10

Arberry and guided him on the two highways?
Maududi And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)?
Pickthall And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways?
Sahih And have shown him the two ways?
Yusuf Ali And shown him the two highways?

90.11

surah 90 - verse 11

Arberry Yet he has not assaulted the steep;
Maududi But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep.
Pickthall But he hath not attempted the Ascent -
Sahih But he has not broken through the difficult pass.
Yusuf Ali But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.

90.12

surah 90 - verse 12

Arberry and what shall teach thee what is the steep?
Maududi And what do you know what that difficult steep is?
Pickthall Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! -
Sahih And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-

90.13

surah 90 - verse 13

Arberry The freeing of a slave,
Maududi It is freeing someone's neck from slavery;
Pickthall (It is) to free a slave,
Sahih It is the freeing of a slave
Yusuf Ali (It is:) freeing the bondman;

90.14

surah 90 - verse 14

Arberry or giving food upon a day of hunger
Maududi or giving food on a day of hunger
Pickthall And to feed in the day of hunger.
Sahih Or feeding on a day of severe hunger
Yusuf Ali Or the giving of food in a day of privation

90.15

surah 90 - verse 15

Arberry to an orphan near of kin
Maududi to an orphan near of kin;
Pickthall An orphan near of kin,
Sahih An orphan of near relationship
Yusuf Ali To the orphan with claims of relationship,

90.16

surah 90 - verse 16

Arberry or a needy man in misery;
Maududi or to a destitute lying in dust;
Pickthall Or some poor wretch in misery,
Sahih Or a needy person in misery
Yusuf Ali Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.

90.17

surah 90 - verse 17

Arberry then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful.
Maududi and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion.
Pickthall And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity.
Sahih And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.
Yusuf Ali Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.

90.18

surah 90 - verse 18

Arberry Those are the Companions of the Right Hand.
Maududi These are the People of the Right Hand.
Pickthall Their place will be on the right hand.
Sahih Those are the companions of the right.
Yusuf Ali Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.

90.19

surah 90 - verse 19

translator's name verse
Arberry And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand;
Maududi As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.
Pickthall But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand.
Sahih But they who disbelieved in Our signs - those are the companions of the left.
Yusuf Ali But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.

90.20

surah 90 - verse 20

Arberry over them is a Fire covered down.
Maududi Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in.
Pickthall Fire will be an awning over them.
Sahih Over them will be fire closed in.
Yusuf Ali On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
