Sura Al Lail (The Night)

92.1

surah 92 - verse 1

Arberry By the night enshrouding
Maududi By the night when it enshrouds,
Pickthall By the night enshrouding
Sahih By the night when it covers
Yusuf Ali By the Night as it conceals (the light);

92.2

surah 92 - verse 2

Arberry and the day in splendour
Maududi and by the day when it breaks in its glory,
Pickthall And the day resplendent
Sahih And [by] the day when it appears
Yusuf Ali By the Day as it appears in glory;

92.3

surah 92 - verse 3

Arberry and That which created the male and the female,
Maududi and by Him Who created the male and the female:
Pickthall And Him Who hath created male and female,
Sahih And [by] He who created the male and female,
Yusuf Ali By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-

92.4

surah 92 - verse 4

Arberry surely your striving is to diverse ends.
Maududi surely your strivings are divergent.
Pickthall Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).
Sahih Indeed, your efforts are diverse.
Yusuf Ali Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

92.5

surah 92 - verse 5

Arberry As for him who gives and is godfearing
Maududi As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him),
Pickthall As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)
Sahih As for he who gives and fears Allah
Yusuf Ali So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),

92.6

surah 92 - verse 6

Arberry and confirms the reward most fair,
Maududi and affirmed the Truth of goodness:
Pickthall And believeth in goodness;
Sahih And believes in the best [reward],
Yusuf Ali And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-

92.7

surah 92 - verse 7

Arberry We shall surely ease him to the Easing.
Maududi We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss.
Pickthall Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.
Sahih We will ease him toward ease.
Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.

92.8

surah 92 - verse 8

Arberry But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient,
Maududi As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah),
Pickthall But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,
Sahih But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need
Yusuf Ali But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,

92.9

surah 92 - verse 9

Arberry and cries lies to the reward most fair,
Maududi and denied the Truth of goodness:
Pickthall And disbelieveth in goodness;
Sahih And denies the best [reward],
Yusuf Ali And gives the lie to the best,-

92.10

surah 92 - verse 10

Arberry We shall surely ease him to the Hardship;
Maududi We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship,
Pickthall Surely We will ease his way unto adversity.
Sahih We will ease him toward difficulty.
Yusuf Ali We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;

92.11

surah 92 - verse 11

Arberry his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes.
Maududi and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes.
Pickthall His riches will not save him when he perisheth.
Sahih And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?
Yusuf Ali Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).

92.12

surah 92 - verse 12

Arberry Surely upon Us rests the guidance,
Maududi Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way,
Pickthall Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance
Sahih Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.
Yusuf Ali Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide,

92.13

surah 92 - verse 13

Arberry and to Us belong the Last and the First.
Maududi and to Us belong the Next Life and the present.
Pickthall And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.
Sahih And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
Yusuf Ali And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.

92.14

surah 92 - verse 14

Arberry Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames,
Maududi I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire,
Pickthall Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire
Sahih So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.
Yusuf Ali Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;

92.15

surah 92 - verse 15

Arberry whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted,
Maududi where none shall burn except the most wicked,
Pickthall Which only the most wretched must endure,
Sahih None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.
Yusuf Ali None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

92.16

surah 92 - verse 16

Arberry even he who cried lies, and turned away;
Maududi who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it.
Pickthall He who denieth and turneth away.
Sahih Who had denied and turned away.
Yusuf Ali Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

92.17

surah 92 - verse 17

Arberry and from which the most godfearing shall be removed,
Maududi But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it,
Pickthall Far removed from it will be the righteous
Sahih But the righteous one will avoid it -
Yusuf Ali But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-

92.18

surah 92 - verse 18

Arberry even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself
Maududi the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself;
Pickthall Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).
Sahih [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself
Yusuf Ali Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,

92.19

surah 92 - verse 19

Arberry and confers no favour on any man for recompense,
Maududi not as payment for any favours that he received,
Pickthall And none hath with him any favour for reward,
Sahih And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded
Yusuf Ali And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

92.20

surah 92 - verse 20

Arberry only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High;
Maududi but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High.
Pickthall Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.
Sahih But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.
Yusuf Ali But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;
