Surah Al Inshirah (The Opening Up)

94.1

surah 94 - verse 1

Arberry Did We not expand thy breast for thee
Maududi (O Prophet), Did We not lay open your breast
Pickthall Have We not caused thy bosom to dilate,
Sahih Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?
Yusuf Ali Have We not expanded thee thy breast?-

Arberry and lift from thee thy burden,
Maududi and relieve you of the burden
Pickthall And eased thee of the burden
Sahih And We removed from you your burden
Yusuf Ali And removed from thee thy burden

94.3

surah 94 - verse 3

Arberry the burden that weighed down thy back?
Maududi that had well-nigh broken your back?
Pickthall Which weighed down thy back;
Sahih Which had weighed upon your back
Yusuf Ali The which did gall thy back?-

94.4

surah 94 - verse 4

Arberry Did We not exalt thy fame?
Maududi And did We not exalt your fame?
Pickthall And exalted thy fame?
Sahih And raised high for you your repute.
Yusuf Ali And raised high the esteem (in which) thou (art held)?

94.5

surah 94 - verse 5

Arberry So truly with hardship comes ease,
Maududi Indeed, there is ease with hardship.
Pickthall But lo! with hardship goeth ease,
Sahih For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.
Yusuf Ali So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief:

Arberry truly with hardship comes ease.'
Maududi Most certainly, there is ease with hardship.
Pickthall Lo! with hardship goeth ease;
Sahih Indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.
Yusuf Ali Verily, with every difficulty there is relief.

94.7

Arberry So when thou art empty, labour,
Maududi So, whenever you are free, strive in devotion,
Pickthall So when thou art relieved, still toil
Sahih So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].
Yusuf Ali Therefore, when thou art free (from thine immediate task), still labour hard,

surah 94 - verse 8

Arberry and let thy Lord be thy Quest.
Maududi and turn to your Lord with longing.
Pickthall And strive to please thy Lord.
Sahih And to your Lord direct [your] longing.
Yusuf Ali And to thy Lord turn (all) thy attention.
