Sura Al Alaq (The Clot)

96.1

surah 96 - verse 1

Arberry Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created,
Maududi Recite in the name of your Lord Who created,
Pickthall Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,
Sahih Recite in the name of your Lord who created -
Yusuf Ali Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

96.2

surah 96 - verse 2

Arberry created Man of a blood-clot.
Maududi created man from a clot of congealed blood.
Pickthall Createth man from a clot.
Sahih Created man from a clinging substance.
Yusuf Ali Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

96.3

surah 96 - verse 3

Arberry Recite: And thy Lord is the Most Generous,
Maududi Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous,
Pickthall Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,
Sahih Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -
Yusuf Ali Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,-

surah 96 - verse 4

Maududi Who taught by the pen,
Pickthall Who teacheth by the pen,
Sahih Who taught by the pen -
Yusuf Ali He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

96.5

surah 96 - verse 5

Arberry taught Man that he knew not.
Maududi taught man what he did not know.
Pickthall Teacheth man that which he knew not.
Sahih Taught man that which he knew not.
Yusuf Ali Taught man that which he knew not.

96.6

surah 96 - verse 6

Arberry No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent,
Maududi Nay, surely man transgresses;
Pickthall Nay, but verily man is rebellious
Sahih No! [But] indeed, man transgresses
Yusuf Ali Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,

Arberry for he thinks himself self-sufficient.
Maududi for he believes himself to be self-sufficient.
Pickthall That he thinketh himself independent!
Sahih Because he sees himself self-sufficient.
Yusuf Ali In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.

96.8

surah 96 - verse 8

Arberry Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning.
Maududi Surely to your Lord is your return.
Pickthall Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.
Sahih Indeed, to your Lord is the return.
Yusuf Ali Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all).

96.9

Arberry What thinkest thou? He who forbids
Maududi Did you see him who forbids
Pickthall Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth
Sahih Have you seen the one who forbids
Yusuf Ali Seest thou one who forbids-

96.10

surah 96 - verse 10

Arberry a servant when he prays --
Maududi a servant (of Allah) when he prays?
Pickthall A slave when he prayeth?
Sahih A servant when he prays?
Yusuf Ali A votary when he (turns) to pray?

96.11

surah 96 - verse 11

Arberry What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance
Maududi Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way,
Pickthall Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
Sahih Have you seen if he is upon guidance
Yusuf Ali Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?-

96.12

surah 96 - verse 12

Arberry or bade to godfearing --
Maududi and enjoins piety?
Pickthall Or enjoineth piety?
Sahih Or enjoins righteousness?
Yusuf Ali Or enjoins Righteousness?

96.13

surah 96 - verse 13

Arberry What thinkest thou? If he cries lies, and turns away -
Maududi Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to the Truth) and turns away (from it)?
Pickthall Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?
Sahih Have you seen if he denies and turns away -
Yusuf Ali Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?

96.14

surah 96 - verse 14

Arberry Did he not know that God sees?
Maududi Does he not know that Allah sees everything?
Pickthall Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?
Sahih Does he not know that Allah sees?
Yusuf Ali Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?

96.15

surah 96 - verse 15

Arberry No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock,
Maududi No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock;
Pickthall Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
Sahih No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock -
Yusuf Ali Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,-

96.16

surah 96 - verse 16

Arberry a lying, sinful forelock.
Maududi by the lying forelock steeped in sin.
Pickthall The lying, sinful forelock -
Sahih A lying, sinning forelock.
Yusuf Ali A lying, sinful forelock!

96.17

surah 96 - verse 17

Arberry So let him call on his concourse!
Maududi So let him summon his helpmates;
Pickthall Then let him call upon his henchmen!
Sahih Then let him call his associates;
Yusuf Ali Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):

96.18

surah 96 - verse 18

translator's name verse
Arberry We shall call on the guards of Hell.
Maududi We too shall summon the guards of Hell.
Pickthall We will call the guards of hell.
Sahih We will call the angels of Hell.
Yusuf Ali We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!

96.19

surah 96 - verse 19

translator's name verse
Arberry No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh.
Maududi No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord).
Pickthall Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Sahih No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah].
Yusuf Ali Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
