Chapter 87

Surah Al Ala (The Most High)

87.1

surah 87 - verse 1

Arberry Magnify the Name of thy Lord the Most High
Maududi Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
Pickthall Praise the name of thy Lord the Most High,
Sahih Exalt the name of your Lord, the Most High,
Yusuf Ali Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High,

87.2

surah 87 - verse 2

Arberry who created and shaped,
Maududi Who created all things and fashioned them in good proportion;
Pickthall Who createth, then disposeth;
Sahih Who created and proportioned
Yusuf Ali Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion;

87.3

surah 87 - verse 3

Arberry who determined and guided,
Maududi Who determined and guided them,
Pickthall Who measureth, then guideth;
Sahih And who destined and [then] guided
Yusuf Ali Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;

87.4

surah 87 - verse 4

Arberry who brought forth the pasturage
Maududi Who brought forth the pasture,
Pickthall Who bringeth forth the pasturage,
Sahih And who brings out the pasture
Yusuf Ali And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture,

87.5

surah 87 - verse 5

Arberry then made it a blackening wrack.
Maududi and then made it into a blackish straw.
Pickthall Then turneth it to russet stubble.
Sahih And [then] makes it black stubble.
Yusuf Ali And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble.

87.6

surah 87 - verse 6

Arberry We shall make thee recite, to forget not
Maududi We shall make you recite and then you will not forget,
Pickthall We shall make thee read (O Muhammad) so that thou shalt not forget
Sahih We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget,
Yusuf Ali By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget,

87.7

surah 87 - verse 7

Arberry save what God wills; surely He knows what is spoken aloud and what is hidden.
Maududi except what Allah should wish. He knows all that is manifest and all that is hidden.
Pickthall Save that which Allah willeth. Lo! He knoweth the disclosed and that which still is hidden;
Sahih Except what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.
Yusuf Ali Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden.

87.8

surah 87 - verse 8

Arberry We shall ease thee unto the Easing.
Maududi We shall ease you to follow the way of Ease.
Pickthall And We shall ease thy way unto the state of ease.
Sahih And We will ease you toward ease.
Yusuf Ali And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path).

87.9

surah 87 - verse 9

Arberry Therefore remind, if the Reminder profits,
Maududi So render good counsel if good counsel will avail.
Pickthall Therefor remind (men), for of use is the reminder.
Sahih So remind, if the reminder should benefit;
Yusuf Ali Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer).

87.10

surah 87 - verse 10

Arberry and he who fears shall remember,
Maududi He who fears (Allah) shall heed it,
Pickthall He will heed who feareth,
Sahih He who fears [Allah] will be reminded.
Yusuf Ali The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah):

87.11

surah 87 - verse 11

Arberry but the most wretched shall flout it,
Maududi but the wretched will turn away from it.
Pickthall But the most hapless will flout it,
Sahih But the wretched one will avoid it -
Yusuf Ali But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,

87.12

surah 87 - verse 12

Arberry even he who shall roast in the Great Fire,
Maududi He will be cast into the Great Fire.
Pickthall He who will be flung to the great Fire
Sahih [He] who will [enter and] burn in the greatest Fire,
Yusuf Ali Who will enter the Great Fire,

87.13

surah 87 - verse 13

Arberry then he shall neither die therein, nor live.
Maududi Then he will neither die in it, nor live.
Pickthall Wherein he will neither die nor live.
Sahih Neither dying therein nor living.
Yusuf Ali In which they will then neither die nor live.

87.14

surah 87 - verse 14

Arberry Prosperous is he who has cleansed himself,
Maududi He who purified himself shall prosper,
Pickthall He is successful who groweth,
Sahih He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself
Yusuf Ali But those will prosper who purify themselves,

87.15

surah 87 - verse 15

Arberry and mentions the Name of his Lord, and prays.
Maududi remembering his Lord's name and praying.
Pickthall And remembereth the name of his Lord, so prayeth,
Sahih And mentions the name of his Lord and prays.
Yusuf Ali And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer.

87.16

surah 87 - verse 16

Arberry Nay, but you prefer the present life;
Maududi No; but you prefer the present life,
Pickthall But ye prefer the life of the world
Sahih But you prefer the worldly life,
Yusuf Ali Nay (behold), ye prefer the life of this world;

87.17

surah 87 - verse 17

Arberry and the world to come is better, and more enduring.
Maududi whereas the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Pickthall Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting.
Sahih While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
Yusuf Ali But the Hereafter is better and more enduring.

87.18

surah 87 - verse 18

Arberry Surely this is in the ancient scrolls,
Maududi This, indeed, was in the ancient Scrolls,
Pickthall Lo! This is in the former scrolls.
Sahih Indeed, this is in the former scriptures,
Yusuf Ali And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),-
