Surah Al Tariq (The Morning Star)

86.1

surah 86 - verse 1

Arberry By heaven and the night-star!
Maududi By the heaven, and the night-visitor,
Pickthall By the heaven and the Morning Star
Sahih By the sky and the night comer -
Yusuf Ali By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-

86.2

Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the night-star?
Maududi what do you know what the night-visitor is?
Pickthall - Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!
Sahih And what can make you know what is the night comer?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-

Arberry The piercing star!
Maududi It is the piercing star.
Pickthall - The piercing Star!
Sahih It is the piercing star -
Yusuf Ali (It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-

86.4

surah 86 - verse 4

Arberry Over every soul there is a watcher.
Maududi There is no living being but there is a protector over it.
Pickthall No human soul but hath a guardian over it.
Sahih There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.
Yusuf Ali There is no soul but has a protector over it.

86.5

surah 86 - verse 5

Arberry So let man consider of what he was created;
Maududi So let man consider of what he was created.
Pickthall So let man consider from what he is created.
Sahih So let man observe from what he was created.
Yusuf Ali Now let man but think from what he is created!

86.6

surah 86 - verse 6

Arberry he was created of gushing water
Maududi He was created of a gushing fluid,
Pickthall He is created from a gushing fluid
Sahih He was created from a fluid, ejected,
Yusuf Ali He is created from a drop emitted-

86.7

surah 86 - verse 7

Arberry issuing between the loins and the breast-bones.
Maududi emanating from between the loins and the ribs.
Pickthall That issued from between the loins and ribs.
Sahih Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.
Yusuf Ali Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

86.8

Arberry Surely He is able to bring him back
Maududi Surely He (the Creator) has the power to bring him back (to life).
Pickthall Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
Sahih Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.
Yusuf Ali Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!

86.9

surah 86 - verse 9

Arberry upon the day when the secrets are tried,
Maududi On the Day when man's deepest secrets shall be put to the test
Pickthall On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
Sahih The Day when secrets will be put on trial,
Yusuf Ali The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

86.10

surah 86 - verse 10

Arberry and he shall have no strength, no helper.
Maududi he shall have no power, and no helper.
Pickthall Then will he have no might nor any helper.
Sahih Then man will have no power or any helper.
Yusuf Ali (Man) will have no power, and no helper.

86.11

surah 86 - verse 11

Arberry By heaven of the returning rain,
Maududi By the heaven with its recurring cycle of rain,
Pickthall By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
Sahih By the sky which returns [rain]
Yusuf Ali By the Firmament which returns (in its round),

86.12

surah 86 - verse 12

Arberry by earth splitting with verdure,
Maududi and by the earth ever bursting with verdure,
Pickthall And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
Sahih And [by] the earth which cracks open,
Yusuf Ali And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-

86.13

surah 86 - verse 13

Arberry surely it is a decisive word;
Maududi this (Qur'an) is surely a decisive Word,
Pickthall Lo! this (Qur'an) is a conclusive word,
Sahih Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,
Yusuf Ali Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

86.14

surah 86 - verse 14

Arberry it is no merriment.
Maududi not a flippant jest.
Pickthall It is no pleasantry.
Sahih And it is not amusement.
Yusuf Ali It is not a thing for amusement.

86.15

surah 86 - verse 15

Arberry They are devising guile,
Maududi They are devising a guile,
Pickthall Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muhammad)
Sahih Indeed, they are planning a plan,
Yusuf Ali As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

86.16

surah 86 - verse 16

Arberry and I am devising guile.
Maududi and I too am devising a guile.
Pickthall And I plot a plot (against them).
Sahih But I am planning a plan.
Yusuf Ali And I am planning a scheme.

86.17

surah 86 - verse 17

translator's name verse
Arberry So respite the unbelievers; delay with them awhile.
Maududi So leave the unbelievers to themselves; respite them awhile.
Pickthall So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.
Sahih So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.
Yusuf Ali Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
