36.21

surah 36 - verse 21

Arberry	Follow such as ask no wage of you, that are right-guided.
Maududi	follow those who do not ask any recompense from you and are rightly-guided.
Pickthall	Follow those who ask of you no fee, and who are rightly guided.
Sahih	Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.
Yusuf Ali	"Obey those who ask no reward of you (for themselves), and who have themselves received Guidance.

36.22

surah 36 - verse 22

Arberry	And why should I not serve Him who originated me, and unto whom you shall be returned?
Maududi	Why should I not serve the One Who created me and to Whom all of you shall be sent back?
Pickthall	For what cause should I not serve Him Who hath created me, and unto Whom ye will be brought back?
Sahih	And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?
Yusuf Ali	"It would not be reasonable in me if I did not serve Him Who created me, and to Whom ye shall (all) be brought back.

36.23

surah 36 - verse 23

Arberry	What, shall I take, apart from Him, gods whose intercession, if the All-merciful desires affliction for me, shall not avail me anything, and who will never deliver me?
Maududi	What! Shall I take any deities apart from Him whose intercession will not avail me the least were the Merciful One to bring any adversity upon me, nor will they be able to rescue me?
Pickthall	Shall I take (other) gods in place of Him when, if the Beneficent should wish me any harm, their intercession will avail me naught, nor can they save?
Sahih	Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?
Yusuf Ali	"Shall I take (other) gods besides Him? If (Allah) Most Gracious should intend some adversity for me, of no use whatever will be their intercession for me, nor can they deliver me.

36.24

surah 36 - verse 24

Arberry	Surely in that case I should be in manifest error.
Maududi	Surely in that case I should indeed be in evident error.
Pickthall	Then truly I should be in error manifest.
Sahih	Indeed, I would then be in manifest error.
Yusuf Ali	"I would indeed, if I were to do so, be in manifest Error.

36.25

Arberry	Behold, I believe in your Lord; therefore hear me!'
Maududi	I believe in your Lord; so listen to me.”
Pickthall	Lo! I have believed in your Lord, so hear me!
Sahih	Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."
Yusuf Ali	"For me, I have faith in the Lord of you (all): listen, then, to me!"

36.26

Maududi	(Eventually they killed him and he was told): “Enter Paradise.” The man exclaimed: “Would that my people knew
Pickthall	It was said (unto him): Enter paradise. He said: Would that my people knew
Sahih	It was said, "Enter Paradise." He said, "I wish my people could know
Yusuf Ali	It was said: "Enter thou the Garden." He said: "Ah me! Would that my People knew (what I know)!-

36.27

surah 36 - verse 27

Arberry	that my Lord has forgiven me and that He has placed me among the honoured.'
Maududi	for what reason Allah has forgiven me and placed me among the honoured ones.”
Pickthall	With what (munificence) my Lord hath pardoned me and made me of the honoured ones!
Sahih	Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."
Yusuf Ali	"For that my Lord has granted me Forgiveness and has enrolled me among those held in honour!"

36.28

surah 36 - verse 28

Arberry	And We sent not down upon his people, after him, any host out of heaven; neither would We send any down.
Maududi	After him, We did not send down any hosts from the heaven; We stood in no need to send down any host.
Pickthall	We sent not down against his people after him a host from heaven, nor do We ever send.
Sahih	And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.
Yusuf Ali	And We sent not down against his People, after him, any hosts from heaven, nor was it needful for Us so to do.

36.29

surah 36 - verse 29

Arberry	It was only one Cry and lo, they were silent and still.
Maududi	There was but a single Blast and suddenly they became silent and still.
Pickthall	It was but one Shout, and lo! they were extinct.
Sahih	It was not but one shout, and immediately they were extinguished.
Yusuf Ali	It was no more than a single mighty Blast, and behold! they were (like ashes) quenched and silent.

36.30

surah 36 - verse 30

Arberry	Ah, woe for those servants! Never comes unto them a Messenger, but they mock at him.
Maududi	Alas for My servants! Never does a Messenger come to them but they mock him.
Pickthall	Ah, the anguish for the bondmen! Never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him!
Sahih	How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.
Yusuf Ali	Ah! Alas for (My) Servants! There comes not a messenger to them but they mock him!

36.31

surah 36 - verse 31

Arberry	What, have they not seen how many generations We have destroyed before them, and that it is not unto them that they return?
Maududi	Have they not seen how many nations before them did We destroy? Thereafter they never came back to them.
Pickthall	Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, which indeed returned not unto them;
Sahih	Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them will not return?
Yusuf Ali	See they not how many generations before them we destroyed? Not to them will they return:

36.32

surah 36 - verse 32

Arberry	They shall every one of them be arraigned before Us.
Maududi	All of them shall (one day) be gathered before Us.
Pickthall	But all, without exception, will be brought before Us.
Sahih	And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.
Yusuf Ali	But each one of them all - will be brought before Us (for judgment).

36.33

surah 36 - verse 33

Arberry	And a sign for them is the dead land, that We quickened and brought forth from it grain, whereof they eat;
Maududi	Let the dead earth be a Sign for them. We gave it life and produced from it grain whereof they eat.
Pickthall	A token unto them is the dead earth. We revive it, and We bring forth from it grain so that they eat thereof;
Sahih	And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.
Yusuf Ali	A Sign for them is the earth that is dead: We do give it life, and produce grain therefrom, of which ye do eat.

36.34

surah 36 - verse 34

Arberry	and We made therein gardens of palms and vines, and therein We caused fountains to gush forth,
Maududi	We made in it gardens of date-palms and vines, and We caused springs to gush forth
Pickthall	And We have placed therein gardens of the date-palm and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein,
Sahih	And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs -
Yusuf Ali	And We produce therein orchard with date-palms and vines, and We cause springs to gush forth therein:

36.35

Arberry	that they might eat of its fruits and their hands' labour. What, will they not be thankful?
Maududi	that they might eat of its fruits. It was not their hands that made them. Will they not, then, give thanks?
Pickthall	That they may eat of the fruit thereof, and their hands made it not. Will they not, then, give thanks?
Sahih	That they may eat of His fruit. And their hands have not produced it, so will they not be grateful?
Yusuf Ali	That they may enjoy the fruits of this (artistry): It was not their hands that made this: will they not then give thanks?

36.36

surah 36 - verse 36

Arberry	Glory be to Him, who created all the pairs of what the earth produces, and of themselves, and of what they know not.
Maududi	Holy is He Who created all things in pairs, whether it be of what the earth produces, and of themselves, and of what they do not know.
Pickthall	Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not!
Sahih	Exalted is He who created all pairs - from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.
Yusuf Ali	Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge.

36.37

surah 36 - verse 37

Arberry	And a sign for them is the night; We strip it of the day and lo, they are in darkness.
Maududi	And the night is another Sign for them. We strip the day from it and they become plunged in darkness.
Pickthall	A token unto them is night. We strip it of the day, and lo! they are in darkness.
Sahih	And a sign for them is the night. We remove from it [the light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.
Yusuf Ali	And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw therefrom the Day, and behold they are plunged in darkness;

36.38

surah 36 - verse 38

Arberry	And the sun -- it runs to a fixed resting-place; that is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing.
Maududi	The sun is running its course to its appointed place. That is the ordaining of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
Pickthall	And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.
Sahih	And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
Yusuf Ali	And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

36.39

surah 36 - verse 39

Arberry	And the moon -- We have determined it by stations, till it returns like an aged palm-bough.
Maududi	We have appointed stages for the moon till it returns in the shape of a dry old branch of palm-tree.
Pickthall	And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.
Sahih	And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.
Yusuf Ali	And the Moon,- We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.

36.40

surah 36 - verse 40

translator's name	verse
Arberry	It behoves not the sun to overtake the moon, neither does the night outstrip the day, each swimming in a sky.
Maududi	Neither does it lie in the sun's power to overtake the moon nor can the night outstrip the day. All glide along, each in its own orbit.
Pickthall	It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.
Sahih	It is not allowable for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
Yusuf Ali	It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).
