Surah As Saaffat (Those who set the ranks)

37.141

surah 37 - verse 141

Arberry and cast lots, and was of the rebutted,
Maududi cast lots, and was among the losers.
Pickthall And then drew lots and was of those rejected;
Sahih And he drew lots and was among the losers.
Yusuf Ali He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:

37.142

surah 37 - verse 142

Arberry then the whale swallowed him down, and he blameworthy.
Maududi Then a fish swallowed him, and he was blameworthy.
Pickthall And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;
Sahih Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.
Yusuf Ali Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.

37.143

surah 37 - verse 143

Arberry Now had he not been of those that glorify God,
Maududi Had he not been one of those who glorify Allah,
Pickthall And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)
Sahih And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,
Yusuf Ali Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,

37.144

surah 37 - verse 144

Arberry he would have tarried in its belly until the day they shall be raised;
Maududi he would certainly have remained in its belly till the Day of Resurrection.
Pickthall He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;
Sahih He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.
Yusuf Ali He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.

37.145

surah 37 - verse 145

Arberry but We cast him upon the wilderness, and he was sick,
Maududi But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill;
Pickthall Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;
Sahih But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.
Yusuf Ali But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,

37.146

Arberry and We caused to grow over him a tree of gourds.
Maududi and caused a gourd tree to grow over him,
Pickthall And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;
Sahih And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.
Yusuf Ali And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.

37.147

surah 37 - verse 147

Arberry Then We sent him unto a hundred thousand, or more,
Maududi and We sent him forth to a nation of a hundred thousand or more,
Pickthall And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more
Sahih And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.
Yusuf Ali And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.

37.148

surah 37 - verse 148

Arberry and they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.
Maududi and they believed. So We let them enjoy life for a while.
Pickthall And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.
Sahih And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time.
Yusuf Ali And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.

37.149

surah 37 - verse 149

Arberry So ask them for a pronouncement -- Has thy Lord daughters, and they sons?
Maududi So ask their opinion: “(Are you convinced) that your Lord should have daughters and you should have sons?
Pickthall Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?
Sahih So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?
Yusuf Ali Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-

37.150

surah 37 - verse 150

Arberry Or did We create the angels females, while they were witnesses?
Maududi Did We create the angels as females the while they witnessed?”
Pickthall Or created We the angels females while they were present?
Sahih Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"
Yusuf Ali Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?

37.151

surah 37 - verse 151

Arberry Is it not of their own calumny that they say,
Maududi Behold, it is one of their fabrications that they say:
Pickthall Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:
Sahih Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say,
Yusuf Ali Is it not that they say, from their own invention,

Arberry 'God has begotten?' They are truly liars.
Maududi “Allah has begotten.” They are liars!
Pickthall Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.
Sahih " Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.
Yusuf Ali "Allah has begotten children"? but they are liars!

Arberry Has He chosen daughters above sons?
Maududi Did He choose daughters rather than sons?
Pickthall (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.
Sahih Has He chosen daughters over sons?
Yusuf Ali Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?

Arberry What ails you then, how you judge?
Maududi What is the matter with you that you make such strange judgements?
Pickthall What aileth you? How judge ye?
Sahih What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement?
Yusuf Ali What is the matter with you? How judge ye?

Arberry What, and will you not remember?
Maududi Will you then not take heed?
Pickthall Will ye not then reflect?
Sahih Then will you not be reminded?
Yusuf Ali Will ye not then receive admonition?

Maududi Do you have any clear authority for such claims?
Pickthall Or have ye a clear warrant?

Arberry Bring your Book, if you speak truly!
Maududi Bring your Book, if you are truthful.
Pickthall Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.
Sahih Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.
Yusuf Ali Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!

37.158

surah 37 - verse 158

translator's name verse
Arberry They have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn; and the jinn know that they shall be arraigned.
Maududi They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels; and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits).
Pickthall And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).
Sahih And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment].
Yusuf Ali And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)!

37.159

surah 37 - verse 159

Arberry Glory be to God above that they describe,
Maududi (They say): “Exalted be Allah above what they attribute to Him,
Pickthall Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),
Sahih Exalted is Allah above what they describe,
Yusuf Ali Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!

37.160

Arberry except for God's sincere servants.
Maududi all of them except the chosen servants of Allah.
Pickthall Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Sahih Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin].
Yusuf Ali Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.
