Arberry thou art truly among the Envoys
Maududi you are truly among the Messengers,
Pickthall Lo! thou art of those sent
Sahih Indeed you, [O Muhammad], are from among the messengers,

36.5

surah 36 - verse 5

Arberry the sending down of the All-mighty, the All-wise,
Maududi (and this Qur'an) is a revelation from the Most Mighty, the Most Compassionate
Pickthall A revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful,
Sahih [This is] a revelation of the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
Yusuf Ali It is a Revelation sent down by (Him), the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

36.6

surah 36 - verse 6

Arberry that thou mayest warn a people whose fathers were never warned, so they are heedless.
Maududi so that you may warn a people whose ancestors were not warned before wherefore they are heedless.
Pickthall That thou mayst warn a folk whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.
Sahih That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.
Yusuf Ali In order that thou mayest admonish a people, whose fathers had received no admonition, and who therefore remain heedless (of the Signs of Allah).

36.7

surah 36 - verse 7

Arberry The Word has been realised against most of them, yet they do not believe.
Maududi Surely most of them merit the decree of chastisement; so they do not believe.
Pickthall Already hath the judgment, (for their infidelity) proved true of most of them, for they believe not.
Sahih Already the word has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.
Yusuf Ali The Word is proved true against the greater part of them: for they do not believe.

36.8

surah 36 - verse 8

Arberry Surely We have put on their necks fetters up to the chin, so their heads are raised;
Maududi We have put fetters around their necks which reach up to their chins so that they are standing with their heads upright,
Pickthall Lo! We have put on their necks carcans reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.
Sahih Indeed, We have put shackles on their necks, and they are to their chins, so they are with heads [kept] aloft.
Yusuf Ali We have put yokes round their necks right up to their chins, so that their heads are forced up (and they cannot see).

36.9

Arberry and We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier; and We have covered them, so they do not see.
Maududi and We have put a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and have covered them up, so they are unable to see.
Pickthall And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and (thus) have covered them so that they see not.
Sahih And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.
Yusuf Ali And We have put a bar in front of them and a bar behind them, and further, We have covered them up; so that they cannot see.

36.10

surah 36 - verse 10

Arberry Alike it is to them whether thou hast warned them or thou hast not warned them, they do not believe.
Maududi It is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them for they shall not believe.
Pickthall Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not, it is alike for them, for they believe not.
Sahih And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
Yusuf Ali The same is it to them whether thou admonish them or thou do not admonish them: they will not believe.

36.11

surah 36 - verse 11

Arberry Thou only warnest him who follows the Remembrance and who fears the All-merciful in the Unseen; so give him the good tidings of forgiveness and a generous wage.
Maududi You can warn only him who follows the Admonition and fears the Merciful Lord without seeing Him. Give such a one good tidings of forgiveness and a generous reward.
Pickthall Thou warnest only him who followeth the Reminder and feareth the Beneficent in secret. To him bear tidings of forgiveness and a rich reward.
Sahih You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward.
Yusuf Ali Thou canst but admonish such a one as follows the Message and fears the (Lord) Most Gracious, unseen: give such a one, therefore, good tidings, of Forgiveness and a Reward most generous.

36.12

surah 36 - verse 12

Arberry Surely it is We who bring the dead to life and write down what they have forwarded and what they have left behind; everything We have numbered in a clear register.
Maududi We shall surely raise the dead to life and We record what they did and the traces of their deeds that they have left behind. We have encompassed that in a Clear Book.
Pickthall Lo! We it is Who bring the dead to life. We record that which they send before (them, and their footprints. And all things We have kept in a clear Register.
Sahih Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register.
Yusuf Ali Verily We shall give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before and that which they leave behind, and of all things have We taken account in a clear Book (of evidence).

36.13

surah 36 - verse 13

Arberry Strike for them a similitude -- the inhabitants of the city, when the Envoys came to it;
Maududi Recite to them, as a case in point, the story of the people of the town when the Messengers came to them.
Pickthall Coin for them a similitude: The people of the city when those sent (from Allah) came unto them;
Sahih And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it -
Yusuf Ali Set forth to them, by way of a parable, the (story of) the Companions of the City. Behold!, there came messengers to it.

36.14

surah 36 - verse 14

Arberry when We sent unto them two men, but they cried them lies, so We sent a third as reinforcement. They said, 'We are assuredly Envoys unto you.
Maududi We sent to them two Messengers and they rejected both of them as liars. Then We strengthened them with a third (Messenger).
Pickthall When We sent unto them twain, and they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: Lo! we have been sent unto you.
Sahih When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened them with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."
Yusuf Ali When We (first) sent to them two messengers, they rejected them: But We strengthened them with a third: they said, "Truly, we have been sent on a mission to you."

36.15

surah 36 - verse 15

Arberry They said, 'You are naught but mortals like us; the All-merciful has not sent down anything. You are speaking only lies.'
Maududi They said: “We have been sent to you as Messengers.” The people of the town said: “You are only human beings like ourselves, and the Merciful Lord has revealed nothing. You are simply lying.”
Pickthall They said: Ye are but mortals like unto us. The Beneficent hath naught revealed. Ye do but lie!
Sahih They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."
Yusuf Ali The (people) said: "Ye are only men like ourselves; and (Allah) Most Gracious sends no sort of revelation: ye do nothing but lie."

36.16

surah 36 - verse 16

Arberry They said, 'Our Lord knows we are Envoys unto you;
Maududi The Messengers said: “Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you
Pickthall They answered: Our Lord knoweth that we are indeed sent unto you,
Sahih They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,
Yusuf Ali They said: "Our Lord doth know that we have been sent on a mission to you:

36.17

surah 36 - verse 17

Arberry and it is only for us to deliver the Manifest Message.'
Maududi and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
Pickthall And our duty is but plain conveyance (of the message).
Sahih And we are not responsible except for clear notification."
Yusuf Ali "And our duty is only to proclaim the clear Message."

36.18

surah 36 - verse 18

Arberry They said, 'We augur ill of you. If you give not over, we will stone you and there shall visit you from us a painful chastisement.'
Maududi The people of the town said: “We believe you are an evil omen for us. If you do not desist, we will stone you or you will receive a grievous chastisement from us.”
Pickthall (The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands.
Sahih They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment."
Yusuf Ali The (people) said: "for us, we augur an evil omen from you: if ye desist not, we will certainly stone you. And a grievous punishment indeed will be inflicted on you by us."

36.19

surah 36 - verse 19

Arberry They said, 'Your augury is with you; if you are reminded? But you are a prodigal people.'
Maududi The Messengers replied: “Your evil omen is with you. (Are you saying this) because you were asked to take heed? The truth is that you are a people who have exceeded all bounds.”
Pickthall They said: Your evil augury be with you! Is it because ye are reminded (of the truth)? Nay, but ye are froward folk!
Sahih They said, "Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."
Yusuf Ali They said: "Your evil omens are with yourselves: (deem ye this an evil omen). If ye are admonished? Nay, but ye are a people transgressing all bounds!"

36.20

surah 36 - verse 20

Arberry Then came a man from the furthest part of the city, running; he said, 'My people, follow the Envoys!
Maududi In the meantime a man came running from the far end of the town, saying: “My people, follow the Messengers;
Pickthall And there came from the uttermost part of the city a man running. He cried: O my people! Follow those who have been sent!
Sahih And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers.
Yusuf Ali Then there came running, from the farthest part of the City, a man, saying, "O my people! Obey the messengers:
