Maududi The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers.
Pickthall (The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah)

Arberry when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing?

Arberry 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being.
Maududi I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe.
Pickthall And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds.
Sahih And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.
Yusuf Ali "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.

Arberry Will you be left secure in this here,

Yusuf Ali "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)?

Arberry Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains?
Maududi You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that.
Pickthall Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful?
Sahih And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.

Arberry They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched;
Maududi They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched;
Pickthall They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched;
Sahih They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
Yusuf Ali They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

Arberry thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.'
Maududi you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful."
Pickthall Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful.
Sahih You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."
Yusuf Ali "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!"

Arberry He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed,
Maududi Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink.
Pickthall He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day.
Sahih He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.
Yusuf Ali He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed.

26.156

surah 26 - verse 156

Arberry and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.'
Maududi Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you."
Pickthall And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day.
Sahih And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."
Yusuf Ali "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you."

Arberry But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful,
Maududi But they hamstrung her and then regretted it.
Pickthall But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent.
Sahih But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.
Yusuf Ali But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets.

26.158

surah 26 - verse 158

Arberry and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
Maududi So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.
Pickthall So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers.
Sahih And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Yusuf Ali But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

surah 26 - verse 159

Arberry Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
Maududi Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate.
Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
Sahih And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
