Surah Ash Shuaraa (The Poets)

26.201

surah 26 - verse 201

Arberry who will not believe in it, until they see the painful chastisement
Maududi They will not believe in it until they clearly see the grievous chastisement.
Pickthall They will not believe in it till they behold the painful doom,
Sahih They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.
Yusuf Ali They will not believe in it until they see the grievous Penalty;

26.202

surah 26 - verse 202

Arberry so that it will come upon them suddenly, while they are not aware,
Maududi But when it comes upon them suddenly, taking them unawares,
Pickthall So that it will come upon them suddenly, when they perceive not.
Sahih And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.
Yusuf Ali But the (Penalty) will come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not;

Arberry and they will say, 'Shall we be respited?'
Maududi they say: "Can we be granted some respite?"
Pickthall Then they will say: Are we to be reprieved?
Sahih And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"
Yusuf Ali Then they will say: "Shall we be respited?"

26.204

Arberry What, do they seek to hasten Our chastisement?
Maududi Do they really want Our chastisement to be expedited?
Pickthall Would they (now) hasten on Our doom?
Sahih So for Our punishment are they impatient?
Yusuf Ali Do they then ask for Our Penalty to be hastened on?

Arberry What thinkest thou? If We give them enjoyment of days for many years,
Maududi Did you consider that if We were to let them enjoy life for many years
Pickthall Hast thou then seen, if We content them for (long) years,
Sahih Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
Yusuf Ali Seest thou? If We do let them enjoy (this life) for a few years,

Arberry then there comes on them that they were promised,
Maududi and then the chastisement of which they were being warned were to come upon them,
Pickthall And then cometh that which they were promised,
Sahih And then there came to them that which they were promised?
Yusuf Ali Yet there comes to them at length the (Punishment) which they were promised!

Arberry what will it then avail them, the enjoyment of days they were given?
Maududi of what avail will be the provisions of life which they have been granted to enjoy?
Pickthall (How) that wherewith they were contented naught availeth them?
Sahih They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.
Yusuf Ali It will profit them not that they enjoyed (this life)!

Arberry Never a city We destroyed, but it had warners
Maududi We never destroyed any habitation but that it had warners
Pickthall And We destroyed no township but it had its warners
Sahih And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners
Yusuf Ali Never did We destroy a population, but had its warners -

Arberry for a reminder; and never did We wrong.
Maududi to admonish them. We have never been unjust.
Pickthall For reminder, for We never were oppressors.
Sahih As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.
Yusuf Ali By way of reminder; and We never are unjust.

26.210

surah 26 - verse 210

Arberry Not by the Satans has it been brought down;
Maududi The satans did not bring down this (Clear Book),
Pickthall The devils did not bring it down.
Sahih And the devils have not brought the revelation down.
Yusuf Ali No evil ones have brought down this (Revelation):

Arberry it behoves them not, neither are they able.
Maududi nor does it behove them, nor does it lie in their power.
Pickthall It is not meet for them, nor is it in their power,
Sahih It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.
Yusuf Ali It would neither suit them nor would they be able (to produce it).

26.212

Arberry Truly, they are expelled from hearing.
Maududi Indeed they are debarred from even hearing it.
Pickthall Lo! verily they are banished from the hearing.
Sahih Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.
Yusuf Ali Indeed they have been removed far from even (a chance of) hearing it.

26.213

surah 26 - verse 213

Arberry So call thou not upon another god with God, lest thou shouldst be one of those that are chastised.
Maududi So do not call any other god beside Allah lest you become of those who will be punished,
Pickthall Therefor invoke not with Allah another god, lest thou be one of the doomed.
Sahih So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished.
Yusuf Ali So call not on any other god with Allah, or thou wilt be among those under the Penalty.

Arberry And warn thy clan, thy nearest kin.
Maududi and warn your nearest kinsmen;
Pickthall And warn thy tribe of near kindred,
Sahih And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred.
Yusuf Ali And admonish thy nearest kinsmen,

Arberry Lower thy wing to those who follow thee, being believers;
Maududi and be meek to the believers who follow you.
Pickthall And lower thy wing (in kindness) unto those believers who follow thee.
Sahih And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers.
Yusuf Ali And lower thy wing to the Believers who follow thee.

26.216

surah 26 - verse 216

Arberry then, if they disobey thee, say, 'I am quit of that you do.'
Maududi Then if they disobey you say to them: "I am quit of what you do."
Pickthall And if they (thy kinsfolk) disobey thee, say: Lo! I am innocent of what they do.
Sahih And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."
Yusuf Ali Then if they disobey thee, say: "I am free (of responsibility) for what ye do!"

Arberry Surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
Maududi He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Pickthall Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Knower.
Sahih Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Yusuf Ali For it is He Who heareth and knoweth all things.
