Surah Ash Shuaraa (The Poets)

26.181

surah 26 - verse 181

Arberry Fill up the measure, and be not cheaters,
Maududi Fill up the measure and do not diminish the goods of people,
Pickthall Give full measure, and be not of those who give less (than the due).
Sahih Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.
Yusuf Ali "Give just measure, and cause no loss (to others by fraud).

26.182

surah 26 - verse 182

Arberry and weigh with the straight balance,
Maududi weigh with an even balance
Pickthall And weigh with the true balance.
Sahih And weigh with an even balance.
Yusuf Ali "And weigh with scales true and upright.

26.183

surah 26 - verse 183

Arberry and diminish not the goods of the people, and do not mischief in the earth, working corruption.
Maududi and do not deliver short, and do not go about creating mischief in the land,
Pickthall Wrong not mankind in their goods, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.
Sahih And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.
Yusuf Ali "And withhold not things justly due to men, nor do evil in the land, working mischief.

26.184

surah 26 - verse 184

Arberry Fear Him who created you, and the generations of the ancients.'
Maududi and have fear of Him Who created you and the earlier generations."
Pickthall And keep your duty unto Him Who created you and the generations of the men of old.
Sahih And fear He who created you and the former creation."
Yusuf Ali "And fear Him Who created you and (who created) the generations before (you)"

26.185

Arberry They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched;
Maududi They said: "You are no more than one of those who have been bewitched,
Pickthall They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched;
Sahih They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.
Yusuf Ali They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched!

26.186

surah 26 - verse 186

Arberry thou art naught but a mortal, like us; indeed, we think that thou art one of the liars.
Maududi you are only a mortal like us. Indeed we believe that you are an utter liar.
Pickthall Thou art but a mortal like us, and lo! we deem thee of the liars.
Sahih You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.
Yusuf Ali "Thou art no more than a mortal like us, and indeed we think thou art a liar!

26.187

surah 26 - verse 187

Arberry Then drop down on us lumps from heaven, if thou art one of the truthful.'
Maududi So cause a piece of the sky to fall upon us if you are truthful."
Pickthall Then make fragments of the heaven fall upon us, if thou art of the truthful.
Sahih So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."
Yusuf Ali "Now cause a piece of the sky to fall on us, if thou art truthful!"

26.188

surah 26 - verse 188

Arberry He said, 'My Lord knows very well what you are doing.'
Maududi Shuayb said: "My Lord knows well all what you do."
Pickthall He said: My Lord is Best Aware of what ye do.
Sahih He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."
Yusuf Ali He said: "My Lord knows best what ye do."

26.189

surah 26 - verse 189

Arberry But they cried him lies; then there seized them the chastisement of the Day of Shadow; assuredly it was the chastisement of a dreadful day.
Maududi Then they branded him a liar, whereupon the chastisement of the Day of Canopy overtook them. It was the chastisement of a very awesome day.
Pickthall But they denied him, so there came on them the retribution of the day of gloom. Lo! it was the retribution of an awful day.
Sahih And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.
Yusuf Ali But they rejected him. Then the punishment of a day of overshadowing gloom seized them, and that was the Penalty of a Great Day.

26.190

surah 26 - verse 190

Arberry Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers.
Maududi Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe.
Pickthall Lo! herein is indeed a portent; yet most of them are not believers.
Sahih Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.
Yusuf Ali Verily in that is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

26.191

surah 26 - verse 191

Arberry Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate.
Maududi Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate.
Pickthall And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful.
Sahih And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
Yusuf Ali And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

26.192

surah 26 - verse 192

Arberry Truly it is the revelation of the Lord of all Being,
Maududi Indeed this is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe;
Pickthall And lo! it is a revelation of the Lord of the Worlds,
Sahih And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.
Yusuf Ali Verily this is a Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds:

Arberry upon thy heart, that thou mayest be one of the warners,
Maududi to your heart that you might become one of those who warn (others on behalf of Allah),

Sahih Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners -
Yusuf Ali To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish.

Maududi (a revelation embodied) in the scriptures of the ancients.
Pickthall And lo! it is in the Scriptures of the men of old.
Sahih And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.
Yusuf Ali Without doubt it is (announced) in the mystic Books of former peoples.

26.197

surah 26 - verse 197

Arberry Was it not a sign for them, that it is known to the learned of the Children of Israel?
Maududi Is it not a Sign to them - (to wit, the Makkans) - that the learned men of the Children of Israel know that?
Pickthall Is it not a token for them that the doctors of the Children of Israel know it?
Sahih And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?
Yusuf Ali Is it not a Sign to them that the Learned of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)?

26.198

surah 26 - verse 198

Arberry If We had sent it down on a barbarian
Maududi (But such is their adamance) that had We revealed it to one of the non-Arabs and even if he had recited (this clear Arabic discourse) to them
Pickthall And if We had revealed it unto one of any other nation than the Arabs,
Sahih And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners
Yusuf Ali Had We revealed it to any of the non-Arabs,

Arberry and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it.
Maududi they would still not have believed in it.
Pickthall And he had read it unto them, they would not have believed in it.
Sahih And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it.

surah 26 - verse 200

Arberry Even so We have caused it to enter into the hearts of the sinners,
Maududi Thus have We caused this (Admonition) to penetrate the hearts of the culprits (like a hot rod).
Pickthall Thus do We make it traverse the hearts of the guilty.
Sahih Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals.
Yusuf Ali Thus have We caused it to enter the hearts of the sinners.
