50.2

surah 50 - verse 2

Arberry Nay, but they marvel that a warner has come to them from among them; and the unbelievers say, 'This is a marvellous thing!
Maududi Nay; they wondered that a warner should have come to them from among themselves. The unbelievers said: “This indeed is a strange thing.
Pickthall Nay, but they marvel that a warner of their own hath come unto them; and the disbelievers say: This is a strange thing:
Sahih But they wonder that there has come to them a warner from among themselves, and the disbelievers say, "This is an amazing thing.
Yusuf Ali But they wonder that there has come to them a Warner from among themselves. So the Unbelievers say: "This is a wonderful thing!

50.3

surah 50 - verse 3

Arberry What, when we are dead and become dust? That is a far returning!'
Maududi What! When we are dead and reduced to mere dust, (shall we be raised to life)? Such a return is far-fetched.”
Pickthall When we are dead and have become dust (shall we be brought back again)? That would be a far return!
Sahih When we have died and have become dust, [we will return to life]? That is a distant return."
Yusuf Ali "What! When we die and become dust, (shall we live again?) That is a (sort of) return far (from our understanding)."

50.4

surah 50 - verse 4

Arberry We know what the earth diminishes of them; with Us is a book recording.
Maududi (Thus do they imagine, although) We know well what the earth takes away from them. With Us is a Record that preserves everything.
Pickthall We know that which the earth taketh of them, and with Us is a recording Book.
Sahih We know what the earth diminishes of them, and with Us is a retaining record.
Yusuf Ali We already know how much of them the earth takes away: With Us is a record guarding (the full account).

50.5

surah 50 - verse 5

Arberry Nay, but they cried lies to the truth when it came to them, and so they are in a case confused.
Maududi They gave the lie to the Truth when it came to them. So they are now in a state of great perplexity.
Pickthall Nay, but they have denied the truth when it came unto them, therefor they are now in troubled case.
Sahih But they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a confused condition.
Yusuf Ali But they deny the Truth when it comes to them: so they are in a confused state.

50.6

surah 50 - verse 6

Arberry What, have they not beheld heaven above them, how We have built it, and decked it out fair, and it has no cracks?
Maududi Did they never observe the sky above them: how We built it and beautified it; and it has no cracks;
Pickthall Have they not then observed the sky above them, how We have constructed it and beautified it, and how there are no rifts therein?
Sahih Have they not looked at the heaven above them - how We structured it and adorned it and [how] it has no rifts?
Yusuf Ali Do they not look at the sky above them?- How We have made it and adorned it, and there are no flaws in it?

50.7

surah 50 - verse 7

Arberry And the earth -- We stretched it forth, and cast on it firm mountains, and We caused to grow therein of every joyous kind
Maududi and We have spread out the earth, and have set upon it firm mountains, and have caused it to bring out plants of all beauteous kinds?
Pickthall And the earth have We spread out, and have flung firm hills therein, and have caused of every lovely kind to grow thereon,
Sahih And the earth - We spread it out and cast therein firmly set mountains and made grow therein [something] of every beautiful kind,
Yusuf Ali And the earth- We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and produced therein every kind of beautiful growth (in pairs)-

50.8

surah 50 - verse 8

Arberry for an insight and a reminder to every penitent servant.
Maududi All these are to serve as eye openers and as a lesson to every being who is prone to turn (to the Truth).
Pickthall A vision and a reminder for every penitent slave.
Sahih Giving insight and a reminder for every servant who turns [to Allah].
Yusuf Ali To be observed and commemorated by every devotee turning (to Allah).

50.9

surah 50 - verse 9

Arberry And We sent down out of heaven water blessed, and caused to grow thereby gardens and grain of harvest
Maududi We also sent down blessed water from the heaven, wherewith We caused gardens and harvest-grain to grow,
Pickthall And We send down from the sky blessed water whereby We give growth unto gardens and the grain of crops,
Sahih And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest
Yusuf Ali And We send down from the sky rain charted with blessing, and We produce therewith gardens and Grain for harvests;

50.10

surah 50 - verse 10

Arberry and tall palm-trees with spathes compact,
Maududi and tall palm-trees with their thickly-clustered spathes;
Pickthall And lofty date-palms with ranged clusters,
Sahih And lofty palm trees having fruit arranged in layers -
Yusuf Ali And tall (and stately) palm-trees, with shoots of fruit-stalks, piled one over another;-

50.11

surah 50 - verse 11

Arberry a provision for the servants, and thereby We revived a land that was dead. Even so is the coming forth.
Maududi all this as sustenance for Our servants. And thus We do bring the dead land back to life with water. Such shall be the coming forth (of human beings from the earth).
Pickthall Provision (made) for men; and therewith We quicken a dead land. Even so will be the resurrection of the dead.
Sahih As provision for the servants, and We have given life thereby to a dead land. Thus is the resurrection.
Yusuf Ali As sustenance for (Allah's) Servants;- and We give (new) life therewith to land that is dead: Thus will be the Resurrection.

50.12

surah 50 - verse 12

Arberry Cried lies before them the people of Noah and the men of Er-Rass, and Thamood,
Maududi In the past Noah's people, and the people of Rass and Thamud gave the lie (to Messengers),
Pickthall The folk of Noah denied (the truth) before them, and (so did) the dwellers at Ar-Rass and (the tribe of) Thamud,
Sahih The people of Noah denied before them, and the companions of the well and Thamud
Yusuf Ali Before them was denied (the Hereafter) by the People of Noah, the Companions of the Rass, the Thamud,

surah 50 - verse 14

Arberry the men of the Thicket, the people of Tubba'. Every one cried lies to the Messengers, and My threat came true.
Maududi and the people of Aykah, and the people of Tubba'. They all gave the lie to the Messengers. Thereafter My threat of chastisement against them was fulfilled.
Pickthall And the dwellers in the wood, and the folk of Tubb'a: every one denied their messengers, therefor My threat took effect.
Sahih And the companions of the thicket and the people of Tubba'. All denied the messengers, so My threat was justly fulfilled.
Yusuf Ali The Companions of the Wood, and the People of Tubba'; each one (of them) rejected the messengers, and My warning was duly fulfilled (in them).

50.15

surah 50 - verse 15

Arberry What, were We wearied by the first creation? No indeed; but they are in uncertainty as to the new creation.
Maududi Did We, then, become worn out by the first creation? Not at all; but they are in doubt about a fresh creation.
Pickthall Were We then worn out by the first creation? Yet they are in doubt about a new creation.
Sahih Did We fail in the first creation? But they are in confusion over a new creation.
Yusuf Ali Were We then weary with the first Creation, that they should be in confused doubt about a new Creation?

50.16

surah 50 - verse 16

Arberry We indeed created man; and We know what his soul whispers within him, and We are nearer to him than the jugular vein.
Maududi Surely We have created man, and We know the promptings of his heart, and We are nearer to him than even his jugular vein.
Pickthall We verily created man and We know what his soul whispereth to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.
Sahih And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein
Yusuf Ali It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than (his) jugular vein.

50.17

surah 50 - verse 17

Arberry When the two angels meet together, sitting one on the right, and one on the left,
Maududi Moreover, there are two scribes, one each sitting on the right and the left, recording everything.
Pickthall When the two Receivers receive (him), seated on the right hand and on the left,
Sahih When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left.
Yusuf Ali Behold, two (guardian angels) appointed to learn (his doings) learn (and noted them), one sitting on the right and one on the left.

50.18

surah 50 - verse 18

Arberry not a word he utters, but by him is an observer ready.
Maududi He utters not a word, but there is a vigilant watcher at hand.
Pickthall He uttereth no word but there is with him an observer ready.
Sahih Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].
Yusuf Ali Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready (to note it).

50.19

surah 50 - verse 19

Arberry And death's agony comes in truth; that is what thou wast shunning!
Maududi Lo, the agony of death has indeed come with the Truth. That is what you had sought to avoid.
Pickthall And the agony of death cometh in truth. (And it is said unto him): This is that which thou wast wont to shun.
Sahih And the intoxication of death will bring the truth; that is what you were trying to avoid.
Yusuf Ali And the stupor of death will bring Truth (before his eyes): "This was the thing which thou wast trying to escape!"

50.20

surah 50 - verse 20

Arberry And the Trumpet shall be blown; that is the Day of the Threat.
Maududi And then the Trumpet was blown. This is the day of the promised chastisement.
Pickthall And the trumpet is blown. This is the threatened Day.
Sahih And the Horn will be blown. That is the Day of [carrying out] the threat.
Yusuf Ali And the Trumpet shall be blown: that will be the Day whereof Warning (had been given).
