Surah Inshiqaq (The Splitting)

84.1

surah 84 - verse 1

Arberry When heaven is rent asunder
Maududi When the sky is rent asunder
Pickthall When the heaven is split asunder
Sahih When the sky has split [open]
Yusuf Ali When the sky is rent asunder,

84.2

surah 84 - verse 2

Arberry and gives ear to its Lord, and is fitly disposed;
Maududi and hearkens to the command of its Lord, doing what it should;
Pickthall And attentive to her Lord in fear,
Sahih And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so]
Yusuf Ali And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord, and it must needs (do so);-

84.3

surah 84 - verse 3

Arberry when earth is stretched out
Maududi and when the earth is stretched out
Pickthall And when the earth is spread out
Sahih And when the earth has been extended
Yusuf Ali And when the earth is flattened out,

84.4

surah 84 - verse 4

Arberry and casts forth what is in it, and voids itself,
Maududi and casts out what is within it and is emptied,
Pickthall And hath cast out all that was in her, and is empty
Sahih And has cast out that within it and relinquished [it]
Yusuf Ali And casts forth what is within it and becomes (clean) empty,

84.5

surah 84 - verse 5

Arberry and gives ear to its Lord, and is fitly disposed!
Maududi and hearkens to the command of its Lord, doing what it should.
Pickthall And attentive to her Lord in fear!
Sahih And has responded to its Lord and was obligated [to do so] -
Yusuf Ali And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord,- and it must needs (do so);- (then will come Home the full reality).

84.6

surah 84 - verse 6

Arberry O Man! Thou art labouring unto thy Lord laboriously, and thou shalt encounter Him.
Maududi O man, you are striving unto your Lord and you will meet Him.
Pickthall Thou, verily, O man, art working toward thy Lord a work which thou wilt meet (in His presence).
Sahih O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it.
Yusuf Ali O thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him.

84.7

surah 84 - verse 7

Arberry Then as for him who is given his book in his right hand,
Maududi Whoever is given the Record in his right hand
Pickthall Then whoso is given his account in his right hand
Sahih Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand,
Yusuf Ali Then he who is given his Record in his right hand,

84.8

surah 84 - verse 8

Arberry he shall surely receive an easy reckoning
Maududi shall be called to an easy accounting,
Pickthall He truly will receive an easy reckoning
Sahih He will be judged with an easy account
Yusuf Ali Soon will his account be taken by an easy reckoning,

Arberry and he will return to his family joyfully.
Maududi and shall return to his people joyfully.
Pickthall And will return unto his folk in joy.
Sahih And return to his people in happiness.
Yusuf Ali And he will turn to his people, rejoicing!

84.10

Arberry But as for him who is given his book behind his back,
Maududi But he who is given the Record behind his back,
Pickthall But whoso is given his account behind his back,
Sahih But as for he who is given his record behind his back,
Yusuf Ali But he who is given his Record behind his back,-

84.11

surah 84 - verse 11

Arberry he shall call for destruction
Maududi shall cry for “perdition,”
Pickthall He surely will invoke destruction
Sahih He will cry out for destruction
Yusuf Ali Soon will he cry for perdition,

84.12

surah 84 - verse 12

Arberry and he shall roast at a Blaze.
Maududi and will enter the Blazing Fire.
Pickthall And be thrown to scorching fire.
Sahih And [enter to] burn in a Blaze.
Yusuf Ali And he will enter a Blazing Fire.

84.13

surah 84 - verse 13

Arberry He once lived among his family joyfully;
Maududi He used to live joyfully among his people,
Pickthall He verily lived joyous with his folk,
Sahih Indeed, he had [once] been among his people in happiness;
Yusuf Ali Truly, did he go about among his people, rejoicing!

84.14

surah 84 - verse 14

Arberry he surely thought he would never revert.
Maududi thinking he would never revert (to Us).
Pickthall He verily deemed that he would never return (unto Allah).
Sahih Indeed, he had thought he would never return [to Allah].
Yusuf Ali Truly, did he think that he would not have to return (to Us)!

84.15

surah 84 - verse 15

Arberry Yes indeed; his Lord had sight of him.
Maududi But no; (how would he not revert)? His Lord was ever watching him.
Pickthall Nay, but lo! his Lord is ever looking on him!
Sahih But yes! Indeed, his Lord was ever of him, Seeing.
Yusuf Ali Nay, nay! for his Lord was (ever) watchful of him!

84.16

surah 84 - verse 16

Arberry No! I swear by the twilight
Maududi Nay; I swear by the twilight;
Pickthall Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset,
Sahih So I swear by the twilight glow
Yusuf Ali So I do call to witness the ruddy glow of Sunset;

84.17

Arberry and the night and what it envelops
Maududi and by the night and what it enfolds,
Pickthall And by the night and all that it enshroudeth,
Sahih And [by] the night and what it envelops
Yusuf Ali The Night and its Homing;

84.18

surah 84 - verse 18

Arberry and the moon when it is at the full,
Maududi and by the moon, when it reaches its fullness:
Pickthall And by the moon when she is at the full,
Sahih And [by] the moon when it becomes full
Yusuf Ali And the Moon in her fullness:

84.19

surah 84 - verse 19

Arberry you shall surely ride stage after stage.
Maududi you shall proceed onwards from stage to stage.
Pickthall That ye shall journey on from plane to plane.
Sahih [That] you will surely experience state after state.
Yusuf Ali Ye shall surely travel from stage to stage.

84.20

surah 84 - verse 20

Arberry Then what ails them, that they believe not,
Maududi So, what is the matter with them that they do not believe,
Pickthall What aileth them, then, that they believe not
Sahih So what is [the matter] with them [that] they do not believe,
Yusuf Ali What then is the matter with them, that they believe not?-
