Surah Al Mutaffifin (Those Who Deal in Fraud)

83.1

surah 83 - verse 1

Arberry Woe to the stinters who,
Maududi Woe to the stinters;
Pickthall Woe unto the defrauders:
Sahih Woe to those who give less [than due],
Yusuf Ali Woe to those that deal in fraud,-

Arberry when they measure against the people, take full measure
Maududi those who, when they take from others by measure, take their full share;
Pickthall Those who when they take the measure from mankind demand it full,
Sahih Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
Yusuf Ali Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, exact full measure,

83.3

Arberry but, when they measure for them or weigh for them, do skimp.
Maududi but who, when they measure or weigh for others, give less than their due.
Pickthall But if they measure unto them or weight for them, they cause them loss.
Sahih But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
Yusuf Ali But when they have to give by measure or weight to men, give less than due.

83.4

Arberry Do those not think that they shall be raised up
Maududi Do they not realise that they will be raised to life
Pickthall Do such (men) not consider that they will be raised again
Sahih Do they not think that they will be resurrected
Yusuf Ali Do they not think that they will be called to account?-

Maududi on a Great Day,
Pickthall Unto an Awful Day,
Sahih For a tremendous Day -
Yusuf Ali On a Mighty Day,

Arberry a day when mankind shall stand before the Lord of all Being?
Maududi a Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the Universe?
Pickthall The day when (all) mankind stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
Sahih The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
Yusuf Ali A Day when (all) mankind will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?

83.7

surah 83 - verse 7

Arberry No indeed; the Book of the libertines is in Sijjin;
Maududi No indeed! Verily the deeds of the wicked are in the Record locked up in the prison-house!
Pickthall Nay, but the record of the vile is in Sijjin -
Sahih No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
Yusuf Ali Nay! Surely the record of the wicked is (preserved) in Sijjin.

83.8

Arberry and what shall teach thee what is Sijjin?
Maududi And how would you know what the Record of the prison-house is?
Pickthall Ah! what will convey unto thee what Sijjin is! -
Sahih And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what Sijjin is?

Maududi It is a Book inscribed.
Pickthall A written record.
Sahih It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.
Yusuf Ali (There is) a Register (fully) inscribed.

83.10

Arberry Woe that day unto those who cry it lies,
Maududi Woe, then, to those that give the lie,
Pickthall Woe unto the repudiators on that day!
Sahih Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
Yusuf Ali Woe, that Day, to those that deny-

Arberry who cry lies to the Day of Doom;
Maududi those that give the lie to the Day of Recompense.
Pickthall Those who deny the Day of Judgment
Sahih Who deny the Day of Recompense.
Yusuf Ali Those that deny the Day of Judgment.

83.12

surah 83 - verse 12

Arberry and none cries lies to it but every guilty aggressor.
Maududi Yet none gives the lie to it except the transgressor immersed in sin;
Pickthall Which none denieth save each criminal transgressor,
Sahih And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
Yusuf Ali And none can deny it but the Transgressor beyond bounds the Sinner!

83.13

surah 83 - verse 13

Arberry When our signs are recited to him, he says, 'Fairy-tales of the ancients!'
Maududi who, when Our verses are recited to him, says: “Mere tales of olden times!”
Pickthall Who, when thou readest unto him Our revelations, saith: (Mere) fables of the men of old.
Sahih When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
Yusuf Ali When Our Signs are rehearsed to him, he says, "Tales of the ancients!"

83.14

surah 83 - verse 14

Arberry No indeed; but that they were earning has rusted upon their hearts.
Maududi No indeed! The truth is that their hearts have become rusted on account of their evil deeds.
Pickthall Nay, but that which they have earned is rust upon their hearts.
Sahih No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
Yusuf Ali By no means! but on their hearts is the stain of the (ill) which they do!

83.15

surah 83 - verse 15

translator's name verse
Arberry No indeed; but upon that day they shall be veiled from their Lord,
Maududi No indeed! On that Day they will be screened off from seeing their Lord,
Pickthall Nay, but surely on that day they will be covered from (the mercy of) their Lord.
Sahih No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
Yusuf Ali Verily, from (the Light of) their Lord, that Day, will they be veiled.

83.16

surah 83 - verse 16

Arberry then they shall roast in Hell.
Maududi and then they shall enter Hell,
Pickthall Then lo! they verily will burn in hell,
Sahih Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
Yusuf Ali Further, they will enter the Fire of Hell.

83.17

surah 83 - verse 17

Arberry Then it shall be said to them, 'This is that you cried lies to.'
Maududi whereafter they will be told: “This is what you used to give the lie to.”
Pickthall And it will be said (unto them): This is that which ye used to deny.
Sahih Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
Yusuf Ali Further, it will be said to them: "This is the (reality) which ye rejected as false!

83.18

surah 83 - verse 18

Arberry No indeed; the book of the pious is in Illiyun;
Maududi No indeed! Verily, the deeds of the virtuous shall be in the record of the exalted ones.
Pickthall Nay, but the record of the righteous is in 'Illiyin -
Sahih No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'illiyyun.
Yusuf Ali Nay, verily the record of the Righteous is (preserved) in 'Illiyin.

83.19

surah 83 - verse 19
