Surah Al Infitar (The Cleaving)

82.1

surah 82 - verse 1

Arberry When heaven is split open,
Maududi When the heaven is split asunder,
Pickthall When the heaven is cleft asunder,
Sahih When the sky breaks apart
Yusuf Ali When the Sky is cleft asunder;

82.2

Arberry when the stars are scattered,
Maududi when the stars are scattered,
Pickthall When the planets are dispersed,
Sahih And when the stars fall, scattering,
Yusuf Ali When the Stars are scattered;

Arberry when the seas swarm over,
Maududi when the seas are made to burst forth,
Pickthall When the seas are poured forth,
Sahih And when the seas are erupted
Yusuf Ali When the Oceans are suffered to burst forth;

82.4

surah 82 - verse 4

Arberry when the tombs are overthrown,
Maududi and when graves are laid open,
Pickthall And the sepulchres are overturned,
Sahih And when the [contents of] graves are scattered,
Yusuf Ali And when the Graves are turned upside down;-

82.5

surah 82 - verse 5

Arberry then a soul shall know its works, the former and the latter.
Maududi everyone shall know all his deeds, both the earlier and the later.
Pickthall A soul will know what it hath sent before (it) and what left behind.
Sahih A soul will [then] know what it has put forth and kept back.
Yusuf Ali (Then) shall each soul know what it hath sent forward and (what it hath) kept back.

82.6

Arberry O Man! What deceived thee as to thy generous Lord
Maududi O man! What has deceived you about your generous Lord
Pickthall O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful,
Sahih O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous,
Yusuf Ali O man! What has seduced thee from thy Lord Most Beneficent?-

82.7

surah 82 - verse 7

Arberry who created thee and shaped thee and wrought thee in symmetry
Maududi Who created you, shaped you, and made you well-proportioned,
Pickthall Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee?
Sahih Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?
Yusuf Ali Him Who created thee. Fashioned thee in due proportion, and gave thee a just bias;

82.8

Arberry and composed thee after what form He would?
Maududi and set you in whatever form He pleased?
Pickthall Into whatsoever form He will, He casteth thee.
Sahih In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.
Yusuf Ali In whatever Form He wills, does He put thee together.

82.9

surah 82 - verse 9

Arberry No indeed; but you cry lies to the Doom;
Maududi No indeed; (the fact is that) you deny the Reckoning, declaring it a lie;
Pickthall Nay, but ye deny the Judgment.
Sahih No! But you deny the Recompense.
Yusuf Ali Nay! But ye do reject Right and Judgment!

82.10

surah 82 - verse 10

Arberry yet there are over you watchers
Maududi you do so the while there are watchers over you;
Pickthall Lo! there are above you guardians,
Sahih And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers,
Yusuf Ali But verily over you (are appointed angels) to protect you,-

Pickthall Generous and recording,
Sahih Noble and recording;
Yusuf Ali Kind and honourable,- Writing down (your deeds):

82.12

surah 82 - verse 12

Arberry who know whatever you do.
Maududi who know what you do.
Pickthall Who know (all) that ye do.
Sahih They know whatever you do.
Yusuf Ali They know (and understand) all that ye do.

82.13

surah 82 - verse 13

Arberry Surely the pious shall be in bliss,
Maududi Surely the virtuous shall be in Bliss,
Pickthall Lo! the righteous verily will be in delight.
Sahih Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure,
Yusuf Ali As for the Righteous, they will be in bliss;

82.14

surah 82 - verse 14

Arberry and the libertines shall be in a fiery furnace
Maududi and the wicked shall be in the Blazing Fire.
Pickthall And lo! the wicked verily will be in hell;
Sahih And indeed, the wicked will be in Hellfire.
Yusuf Ali And the Wicked - they will be in the Fire,

82.15

surah 82 - verse 15

Arberry roasting therein on the Day of Doom,
Maududi They shall enter it on the Day of Recompense
Pickthall They will burn therein on the Day of Judgment,
Sahih They will [enter to] burn therein on the Day of Recompense,
Yusuf Ali Which they will enter on the Day of Judgment,

82.16

surah 82 - verse 16

Arberry nor shall they ever be absent from it.
Maududi and then shall never come out of it.
Pickthall And will not be absent thence.
Sahih And never therefrom will they be absent.
Yusuf Ali And they will not be able to keep away therefrom.

82.17

Arberry And what shall teach thee what is the Day of Doom?
Maududi What do you know what the Day of Recompense is?
Pickthall Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!
Sahih And what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
Yusuf Ali And what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

82.18

surah 82 - verse 18

Arberry Again, what shall teach thee what is the Day of Doom?
Maududi Again, what do you know what the Day of Recompense is?
Pickthall Again, what will convey unto thee what the Day of Judgment is!
Sahih Then, what can make you know what is the Day of Recompense?
Yusuf Ali Again, what will explain to thee what the Day of Judgment is?

82.19

surah 82 - verse 19

Arberry A day when no soul shall possess aught to succour another soul; that day the Command shall belong unto God.
Maududi It is the Day when no one shall have the power to do anything for another, and all command shall be Allah's.
Pickthall A day on which no soul hath power at all for any (other) soul. The (absolute) command on that day is Allah's.
Sahih It is the Day when a soul will not possess for another soul [power to do] a thing; and the command, that Day, is [entirely] with Allah.
Yusuf Ali (It will be) the Day when no soul shall have power (to do) aught for another: For the command, that Day, will be (wholly) with Allah.
