Pickthall Lo! We have appointed it a Lecture, in Arabic that haply ye may understand.
Sahih Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur'an that you might understand.

Maududi Indeed it is transcribed in the Original Book with Us; sublime and full of wisdom.
Pickthall And Lo! in the Source of Decrees, which We possess, it is indeed sublime, decisive.
Sahih And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.
Yusuf Ali And verily, it is in the Mother of the Book, in Our Presence, high (in dignity), full of wisdom.

43.5

surah 43 - verse 5

translator's name verse
Arberry Shall We turn away the Remembrance from you, for that you are a prodigal people?
Maududi Should We divert this Good Counsel from you because you are a people immersed in extravagance?
Pickthall Shall We utterly ignore you because ye are a wanton folk?
Sahih Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?
Yusuf Ali Shall We then take away the Message from you and repel (you), for that ye are a people transgressing beyond bounds?

Arberry How many a Prophet We sent among the ancients,
Maududi How many a Prophet did We send to the earlier peoples!
Pickthall How many a prophet did We send among the men of old!
Sahih And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
Yusuf Ali But how many were the prophets We sent amongst the peoples of old?

43.7

surah 43 - verse 7

translator's name verse
Arberry but not a Prophet came to them, without they mocked at him;
Maududi Yet never did a Prophet come to them but they mocked him.
Pickthall And never came there unto them a prophet but they used to mock him.
Sahih But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
Yusuf Ali And never came there a prophet to them but they mocked him.

43.8

surah 43 - verse 8

translator's name verse
Arberry so We destroyed men stronger in valour than they, and the example of the ancients passed away.
Maududi We utterly destroyed them although they were greater in might than these. The examples of ancient peoples have gone before.
Pickthall Then We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the men of old hath gone (before them).
Sahih And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.
Yusuf Ali So We destroyed (them)- stronger in power than these;- and (thus) has passed on the Parable of the peoples of old.

43.9

surah 43 - verse 9

translator's name verse
Arberry If thou askest them, 'Who created the heavens and earth?' they will say, 'The All-mighty, the All-knowing created them.'
Maududi Yet if you were to ask them: “Who created the heavens and the earth?” they will certainly say: “The All-Mighty, the All-Knowing has created them.”
Pickthall And if thou (Muhammad) ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely answer: The Mighty, the Knower created them;
Sahih And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing."
Yusuf Ali If thou wert to question them, 'Who created the heavens and the earth?' They would be sure to reply, 'they were created by (Him), the Exalted in Power, Full of Knowledge';-

43.10

surah 43 - verse 10

translator's name verse
Arberry He who appointed the earth to be a cradle for you, and appointed ways for you therein, that haply you may be guided;
Maududi He it is Who made this earth for you a cradle and made in it pathways for you that you may find the way to your destination;
Pickthall Who made the earth a resting-place for you, and placed roads for you therein, that haply ye may find your way;
Sahih [The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
Yusuf Ali (Yea, the same that) has made for you the earth (like a carpet) spread out, and has made for you roads (and channels) therein, in order that ye may find guidance (on the way);

43.11

surah 43 - verse 11

translator's name verse
Arberry and who sent down out of heaven water in measure; and We revived thereby a land that was dead; even so you shall be brought forth;
Maududi He Who sent down water from the sky in a determined measure, and thereby We revived a dead land: likewise will you be raised up (from the earth) --
Pickthall And Who sendeth down water from the sky in (due) measure, and We revive a dead land therewith. Even so will ye be brought forth;
Sahih And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -
Yusuf Ali That sends down (from time to time) rain from the sky in due measure;- and We raise to life therewith a land that is dead; even so will ye be raised (from the dead);-

43.12

surah 43 - verse 12

translator's name verse
Arberry and who created the pairs, all of them, and appointed for you ships and cattle such as you ride,
Maududi He Who created these pairs, all of them, and provided you ships and cattle on which you ride,
Pickthall He Who created all the pairs, and appointed for you ships and cattle whereupon ye ride.
Sahih And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount.
Yusuf Ali That has created pairs in all things, and has made for you ships and cattle on which ye ride,

43.13

surah 43 - verse 13

translator's name verse
Arberry that you may be seated on their backs and then remember your Lord's blessing when you are seated on them, and say, 'Glory be to Him, who has subjected this to us, and we ourselves were not equal to it;
Maududi so that when you are mounted upon them you may remember the bounty of your Lord, and say: “Glory be to Him Who has subjected this to Us whereas we did not have the strength to subdue it.
Pickthall That ye may mount upon their backs, and may remember your Lord's favour when ye mount thereon, and may say: Glorified be He Who hath subdued these unto us, and we were not capable (of subduing them);
Sahih That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say. "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.
Yusuf Ali In order that ye may sit firm and square on their backs, and when so seated, ye may celebrate the (kind) favour of your Lord, and say, "Glory to Him Who has subjected these to our (use), for we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves),

43.14

surah 43 - verse 14

translator's name verse
Arberry surely unto our Lord we are turning.'
Maududi It is to our Lord that we shall eventually return.”
Pickthall And lo! unto our Lord we surely are returning.
Sahih And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."
Yusuf Ali "And to our Lord, surely, must we turn back!"

43.15

surah 43 - verse 15

translator's name verse
Arberry Yet they have assigned to Him a part of His own servants! Man is dearly unthankful.
Maududi Yet they have made some of His servants a part of Him. Indeed man is most evidently thankless.
Pickthall And they allot to Him a portion of His bondmen! Lo! man is verily a mere ingrate.
Sahih But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.
Yusuf Ali Yet they attribute to some of His servants a share with Him (in his godhead)! truly is man a blasphemous ingrate avowed!

43.16

surah 43 - verse 16

translator's name verse
Arberry Or has He taken to Himself, from that He creates, daughters, and favoured you with sons?
Maududi Has Allah taken for Himself daughters out of those whom He creates and has chosen you to have sons?
Pickthall Or chooseth He daughters of all that He hath created, and honoureth He you with sons?
Sahih Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?
Yusuf Ali What! has He taken daughters out of what He himself creates, and granted to you sons for choice?

43.17

surah 43 - verse 17

translator's name verse
Arberry And when any of them is given the good tidings of that he has likened to the All-merciful, his face is darkened, and he chokes inwardly.
Maududi (They believe so although when) any of them is given tidings of the birth of a female child the like of which he assigns to the Merciful One, his countenance darkens and he is choked with grief.
Pickthall And if one of them hath tidings of that which he likeneth to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black and he is full of inward rage.
Sahih And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
Yusuf Ali When news is brought to one of them of (the birth of) what he sets up as a likeness to (Allah) Most Gracious, his face darkens, and he is filled with inward grief!

43.18

surah 43 - verse 18

translator's name verse
Arberry What, one who is reared amid ornaments and, when the time of altercation comes, is not to be seen?
Maududi Do they assign to Allah one who grows up amidst ornaments and is not well-versed in the art of disputation?
Pickthall (Liken they then to Allah) that which is bred up in outward show, and in dispute cannot make itself plain?
Sahih So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allah]?
Yusuf Ali Is then one brought up among trinkets, and unable to give a clear account in a dispute (to be associated with Allah)?

43.19

surah 43 - verse 19

translator's name verse
Arberry And they have made the angels, who are themselves servants of the All-merciful, females. What, did they witness their creation? Their witness shall be written down, and they shall be questioned.
Maududi They claim that angels, who are Allah's chosen servants, are females. Did they witness how their body is constituted? Their testimony shall be written and they shall be called to account.
Pickthall And they make the angels, who are the slaves of the Beneficent, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded and they will be questioned.
Sahih And they have made the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
Yusuf Ali And they make into females angels who themselves serve Allah. Did they witness their creation? Their evidence will be recorded, and they will be called to account!

43.20

surah 43 - verse 20

translator's name verse
Arberry They say, 'Had the All-merciful so willed, we would not have served them.' They have no knowledge of that; they are only conjecturing.
Maududi They say: “Had the Merciful One so willed, we would never have worshipped these deities.” But they have no knowledge of the matter and are simply conjecturing.
Pickthall And they say: If the Beneficent One had (so) willed, we should not have worshipped them. They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do but guess.
Sahih And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but falsifying.
Yusuf Ali ("Ah!") they say, "If it had been the will of (Allah) Most Gracious, we should not have worshipped such (deities)!" Of that they have no knowledge! they do nothing but lie!
