Surah Al Muminoon (The Believers)
23.61
surah 23 - verse 61

Arberry | those vie in good works, outracing to them. |
Maududi | it is these who hasten to do good works and vie in so doing with one another. |
Pickthall | These race for the good things, and they shall win them in the race. |
Sahih | It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein. |
Yusuf Ali | It is these who hasten in every good work, and these who are foremost in them. |
23.62
surah 23 - verse 62

Arberry | We charge not any soul save to its capacity, and with Us is a Book speaking truth, and they shall not be wronged. |
Maududi | We do not lay a burden on anyone beyond his capacity. We have a Book with Us that speaks the truth (about everyone); and they shall in no wise be wronged. |
Pickthall | And we task not any soul beyond its scope, and with Us is a Record which speaketh the truth, and they will not be wronged. |
Sahih | And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged. |
Yusuf Ali | On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear: before Us is a record which clearly shows the truth: they will never be wronged. |
23.63

Arberry | Nay, but their hearts are in perplexity as to this, and they have deeds besides that that they are doing. |
Maududi | Nay, their hearts are lost in ignorance of all this; and their deeds too vary from the way (mentioned above). They will persist in these deeds |
Pickthall | Nay, but their hearts are in ignorance of this (Qur'an), and they have other works, besides, which they are doing; |
Sahih | But their hearts are covered with confusion over this, and they have [evil] deeds besides disbelief which they are doing, |
Yusuf Ali | But their hearts are in confused ignorance of this; and there are, besides that, deeds of theirs, which they will (continue) to do,- |
23.64

Arberry | Till, when We seize with the chastisement the ones of them that live at ease, behold, they groan. |
Maududi | until We seize with Our chastisement those of them that are given to luxuriant ways. They will then begin to groan. |
Pickthall | Till when We grasp their luxurious ones with the punishment, behold! they supplicate. |
Sahih | Until when We seize their affluent ones with punishment, at once they are crying [to Allah] for help. |
Yusuf Ali | Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication! |
23.65
surah 23 - verse 65

Arberry | 'Groan not today; surely you shall not be helped from Us. |
Maududi | "Put a stop to your groaning now! Surely no help shall be provided to you from Us. |
Pickthall | Supplicate not this day! Assuredly ye will not be helped by Us. |
Sahih | Do not cry out today. Indeed, by Us you will not be helped. |
Yusuf Ali | (It will be said): "Groan not in supplication this day: for ye shall certainly not be helped by Us. |

Yusuf Ali | "My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels- |

Maududi | behaving arrogantly, and making fun, and talking nonsense (about the Book in your nightly chats)." |
Pickthall | In scorn thereof. Nightly did ye rave together. |
Sahih | In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil. |
Yusuf Ali | "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'an), like one telling fables by night." |
23.68

Arberry | Have they not pondered the saying, or came there upon them that which came not upon their fathers, the ancients? |
Maududi | Did they never ponder over this Word (of God)? Or has he (to wit, the Messenger) brought something the like of which did not come to their forefathers of yore? |
Pickthall | Have they not pondered the Word, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old? |
Sahih | Then have they not reflected over the Qur'an, or has there come to them that which had not come to their forefathers? |
Yusuf Ali | Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old? |
23.69

Maududi | Or is it that they were unaware of their Messenger and were therefore repelled by him for he was a stranger to them? |
Pickthall | Or know they not their messenger, and so reject him? |
Sahih | Or did they not know their Messenger, so they are toward him disacknowledging? |
Yusuf Ali | Or do they not recognise their Messenger, that they deny him? |
23.70
surah 23 - verse 70

Arberry | Or do they say, 'He is bedevilled'? Nay, he has brought them the truth, but most of them are averse from the truth. |
Maududi | Or do they say that there is madness in him? Nay, he has brought them the Truth and it is the Truth that most of them disdain. |
Pickthall | Or say they: There is a madness in him? Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth. |
Sahih | Or do they say, "In him is madness?" Rather, he brought them the truth, but most of them, to the truth, are averse. |
Yusuf Ali | Or do they say, "He is possessed"? Nay, he has brought them the Truth, but most of them hate the Truth. |
23.71

Arberry | Had the truth followed their caprices, the heavens and the earth and whosoever in them is had surely corrupted. Nay, We brought them their Remembrance, but from their Remembrance they turned. |
Maududi | Were the Truth to follow their desires, the order of the heavens and the earth and those who dwell in them would have been ruined. Nay, the fact is that We have brought to them their own remembrance; and yet it is from their own remembrance that they are turning away. |
Pickthall | And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away. |
Sahih | But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away. |
Yusuf Ali | If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition. |
23.72
surah 23 - verse 72

Arberry | Or dost thou ask them for tribute? Yet the tribute of thy Lord is better, and He is the best of providers. |
Maududi | Are you asking them for something? What Allah has given you is the best. He is the Best of providers. |
Pickthall | Or dost thou ask of them (O Muhammad) any tribute? But the bounty of thy Lord is better, for He is Best of all who make provision. |
Sahih | Or do you, [O Muhammad], ask them for payment? But the reward of your Lord is best, and He is the best of providers. |
Yusuf Ali | Or is it that thou askest them for some recompense? But the recompense of thy Lord is best: He is the Best of those who give sustenance. |
23.73
surah 23 - verse 73

Arberry | Assuredly thou art calling them to a straight path; |
Maududi | You are calling them to a Straight Way, |
Pickthall | And lo! thou summonest them indeed unto a straight path. |
Sahih | And indeed, you invite them to a straight path. |
Yusuf Ali | But verily thou callest them to the Straight Way; |

surah 23 - verse 74

Arberry | and surely they that believe not in the world to come are deviating from the path. |
Maududi | but those who do not believe in the Hereafter are ever prone to deviate from the Right Way. |
Pickthall | And lo! those who believe not in the Hereafter are indeed astray from the path. |
Sahih | But indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the path. |
Yusuf Ali | And verily those who believe not in the Hereafter are deviating from that Way. |
23.75
surah 23 - verse 75

Arberry | Did We have mercy on them, and remove the affliction that is upon them, they would persist in their insolence wandering blindly. |
Maududi | Were We to be merciful to them and remove from them their present afflictions, they would persist in their transgression, blindly wandering on. |
Pickthall | Though We had mercy on them and relieved them of the harm afflicting them, they still would wander blindly on in their contumacy. |
Sahih | And even if We gave them mercy and removed what was upon them of affliction, they would persist in their transgression, wandering blindly. |
Yusuf Ali | If We had mercy on them and removed the distress which is on them, they would obstinately persist in their transgression, wandering in distraction to and fro. |
23.76
surah 23 - verse 76

Arberry | We already seized them with the chastisement, yet they abased not themselves to their Lord nor were they humble; |
Maududi | (They are such) that We seized them with chastisement (and yet) they did not humble themselves before their Lord, nor do they entreat |
Pickthall | Already have We grasped them with punishment, but they humble not themselves unto their Lord, nor do they pray, |
Sahih | And We had gripped them with suffering [as a warning], but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate, [and will continue thus] |
Yusuf Ali | We inflicted Punishment on them, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor do they submissively entreat (Him)!- |
23.77
surah 23 - verse 77

Arberry | until, when We open against them a door of terrible chastisement, lo, they are sore confounded at it. |
Maududi | until We opened upon them the door of a severe chastisement. Then lo, in this state they become utterly despaired of any good. |
Pickthall | Until, when We open for them the gate of extreme punishment, behold! they are aghast thereat. |
Sahih | Until when We have opened before them a door of severe punishment, immediately they will be therein in despair. |
Yusuf Ali | Until We open on them a gate leading to a severe Punishment: then Lo! they will be plunged in despair therein! |

surah 23 - verse 78

Arberry | It is He who produced for you hearing, and eyes, and hearts; little thanks you show. |
Maududi | It is He Who has endowed you with the faculties of hearing and sight and has given you hearts (to think). Scarcely do you give thanks. |
Pickthall | He it is Who hath created for you ears and eyes and hearts. Small thanks give ye! |
Sahih | And it is He who produced for you hearing and vision and hearts; little are you grateful. |
Yusuf Ali | It is He Who has created for you (the faculties of) hearing, sight, feeling and understanding: little thanks it is ye give! |
23.79
surah 23 - verse 79

Arberry | It is He who scattered you in the earth, and to Him you shall be mustered. |
Maududi | It is He Who has dispersed you all around the earth, and it is unto Him that you shall all be mustered. |
Pickthall | And He it is Who hath sown you broadcast in the earth, and unto Him ye will be gathered. |
Sahih | And it is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered. |
Yusuf Ali | And He has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered back. |
23.80
surah 23 - verse 80

Arberry | It is He who gives life, and makes to die, and to Him belongs the alternation of night and day; what, will you not understand? |
Maududi | It is He Who gives life and causes death, and He holds mastery over the alternation of night and day. Do you not understand this? |
Pickthall | And He it is Who giveth life and causeth death, and His is the difference of night and day. Have ye then no sense? |
Sahih | And it is He who gives life and causes death, and His is the alternation of the night and the day. Then will you not reason? |
Yusuf Ali | It is He Who gives life and death, and to Him (is due) the alternation of Night and Day: will ye not then understand? |
